Boku no Hero Academia
Re-drawing panels from the manga till my heart is satisfied.
I started reading the series years ago when the anime first started airing I think and then sort of fell off the wagon, only checking in on it from time to time to see how it was coming along. When I found out it had finally ended, I went on to binge read the entire series in two weeks and boy did I catch feelings again. The day I finished the last chapter I went to bed thinking about it and woke up the next morning with it being the first thing on my mind. I am simply obsessed.
Vol.1 - Vol.3
The first couple of sketches are really dodgy because I couldn’t quite commit. But when I got to volume 4 it just sort of clicked and the more I drew, the more fun it became. Even if I’m just making redraws, I’m really enjoying it. I had originally planned to at most do 3 panels for each volume but as you’ll find out, some volumes got more than that. A lot more haha
Vol. 4 - Vol. 5
You can really tell who my favorites are. My top three favs are Fumikage, Ochako and Hitoshi. I do like Izuku and Katsuki to, but I like them for the dynamic they have, so they’re more like top ten as a pair haha There were so many good panels in these volumes... I’m really tempted to go back and do more from vol.3. Side note; I have a derwent coloursoft, aptly named blush pink. I used it liberally on everyone, because I love making cute shit and these kids are stinkin’ cuties the whole bunch.
Vol. 6 - Vol. 8
There’ve been a few doodles I’ve wanted to omit because they’re not very good. But I decided to include them anyway. Not everything you draw has to be a masterpiece and you’re not gonna be in the best condition every day.
Vol. 9 - Vol. 10
I may have given myself a little to free of reigns during volume 10 but heck there’s so much going on and there are so many good panels, and so many of my favorite scenes. I did write at the top of this page, “-till my heart is satisfied” and if I’d left any of these out I would not have been satisfied. So I’m drawing them. All of them. Deal with it haha.
I did move to a new sketchbook at the end of vol.9 so now a lot of the sketches will have a bit of yellow tint because the paper is this off-white color. I’ve redone the coloring on some of the sketches but I feel like replacing the pencil with digital does sort of make it lose some of the charm so I’m not doing it for all of them.
I really needed the last redraw for volume 10 to be Izuku for some reason. I ended up with almost 30 redraws for that volume but I needed it and it really is so much fun and makes me so happy to be able to experience the series one more time by doing this. Onto volume 11, I have a feeling this one will also get quite a few doodles.
vol.11
Well I ended up with over 30 redraw for vol.11, I really hope it’s not going to be like this for every volume because I’m gonna be in trouble haha I don’t mind but if each volume takes me about a month this project is going to last for years. Onto vol.12!
vol.12
Vol.12 took me longer than expected because I ended up doing a bunch of these “twice”. I was racing to finish a sketchbook and did very rough redraws, that I wasn’t at all satisfied with so I went back and touched them up and it just took way too long. In conclusion, not doing that again. I ended up with over 30 redraws for this volume as well and I’m satisfied with just about all of them.
In total at this point I’ve done about 150 redraws which is crazy to me and so cool to think about. I’ve spent so much time studying and learning and honestly I can see it in my own style. Not that it’s changing too much but that I have an easier time figuring out poses and expressions.
