Story Index

This is a list of all the short stories I’ve written for Bokura no Monogatari.

The stories are listed in order of creation. There is a chronology, linked in the sidebar, but each story is self-contained and can be read in any order. Some stories are connected and when they are I have left recommendations of what to read first/next.

Because I was a wee teenager when I started writing these stories I was completely enamored by the Japanese language and named all stories using Japanese to the best of my abilities. I have since improved but I’m nowhere near perfect so please, grain of salt when you read the titles, it’s mostly for fun.

Deatta hi - The day we met
- The first story about how Tsukino and Tsubasa met
Otanjoubi omedetou - Happy birthday
- It’s Tsukino’s birthday and Yoru has some special plans for her
Shokudou - Lunch
- The gang plans a summer outing during lunch
Umi ni ikkou - Lets go to the beach
- They all go to the beach; linked to Shokudou

April, year 2040

Sigma sat at her desk, patiently waiting for their homeroom teacher to arrive. She felt as if she was failing, only a week into her first high school year and she felt like she was completely out of place.

Her family had moved again, she didn’t mind, making friends had always been easy for her. Maybe that was her problem, she was too friendly. Too cheerful, liked everything, hated almost nothing, didn’t really have a strong opinion on anything either. She didn’t fit into any of the friendship circles she saw around her. She wanted to.

Leaning forward and resting her chin in her hands, she felt her knees grazing the underside of the desk. Sigma stretched her legs out, her feet becoming well visible past the desk edge. She frowned.

Not only was she missing a place to fit in, she wanted romance to. That classical head-over-heels in love romance. But who would even like her? Too tall, too skinny, definitely no boobs to speak of. Unattractive in every way.

Finally the clock on the wall ticked past eight and their teacher showed up, tailed by a small boy. Their teacher stood in front of the whiteboard and waited for her students to settle. Sigma sat up straight.

“Good morning everyone, today we’ll start by welcoming a late arrival, please introduce yourself”

The boy took a step forward, where he stood next to the desk.

“Hajimemashite, I’m Hamasaki Epsylon. I attended Katawashi middle school, please to meet you all” he greeted and bowed halfheartedly.

Sigma liked the way he looked, wild and different. His hair was a mess of turquoise shades and his fur curled naturally on his ears and tail, he had to at least be a poodle mix, or a pumi maybe? He had bright orange eyes and a general look of rebellion over him despite wearing the same school uniform as everybody else. She liked his name to. He had written it on the whiteboard after their teacher asked him to, “浜先 ε” it read.

“What kind of name is Epsylon?” a girl piped up from the back of the classroom. “You only wrote a single letter on the board” she added.

“Oh uh, it’s Greek. The letter itself is called Epsilon.” He explained.

“Why don’t you write it out in katakana, Hamasaki-kun. It’ll make it easier for your classmates to remember” the teacher suggested. The boy shrugged and grabbed the marker again, adding ”エプシロン” next to his single letter name.

“May I take a seat now?” he asked and the teacher nodded, looking around the classroom.

“Why don’t you take seat over by Koumajutsu-kun” she said, gesturing to Sigma who raised her hand to show where he was supposed to go.

Sigma watched him sit down and then when he turned to her, she bowed slightly in her seat. “Hi, Koumajutsu Sigma, please to meet you” she said and Hamasaki’s ears perked up.

“Like the Greek letter?” he asked and Sigma nodded, grinning.

“Yeah! Can I call you Epsylon-kun?”

“Sure, if I can call you Sigma-san.”

They whispered quietly about their names for a few minutes. For a few years it had been trendy to name your children using the Greek alphabet. Sigma had never met anyone before with a name like that but Epsylon told her, he had had several schoolmates with Greek letter names. Sigma hoped they could talk more before they went to their first lesson.

At the end of homeroom Nijima, their class president, came over and leaned on Epsylon’s desk.

“Hey Chibi-san” he said, and Sigma could see Epsylon didn’t like that.

“It’s Hamasaki” he corrected; tone flat.

“Sure, sure.” Nijima just replied nonchalantly and crouched down. “You into any sports? Registration closes at the end of this week. So, if you want in you have to go sign up” he explained.

“… no, I’m not really into sports” Epsylon muttered, taking out the books he would need for the first lesson.

“I guessed as much, you’re pretty tiny” Nijima noted.

“Hey-”

“Nijima-kun…” Sigma hurried to interrupt Epsylon, she could tell he was going to say something nasty. She leaned her arms on her desk and both the boys looked to her.

“What, skyscraper?” Nijima replied in a bitter tone.

“Instead of picking on Epsylon-san maybe you could inform him that we also have cultural clubs and that sign up for those open next week? You know, do your job?”

“Freak!” he snapped at her, slamming both his hands down on Epsylon’s desk before storming off. Sigma sat back with a sigh, she hated when people passively picked on others.

“You didn’t have to do that.” Epsylon told her and she threw him a glance.

“I know. But picking a fight on your first day isn’t the greatest way of starting a new school year and besides, Nijima-kun and I already don’t get along, I know him from middle school” she answered shrugging. Gathering her own book so they could leave for the next class.

“Oh… okay then. Why did he call you skyscraper though? That seemed really… odd” Epsylon paused as he watched her stand and she grinned at him.

“Wanna take a guess?” she asked.

“You’re tall” it was like he was holding his breath. “How tall?”

“Haha, no comment” Sigma answered as they left the classroom.

“fair enough… hey-”

Sigma turned back as Epsylon paused, he gave a her a soft smile.

“Thanks.”

Her heart skipped a beat and she smiled back.

June, year 2040

Books were apparently a necessity when studying, how did they not have a more extensive digital library?

Epsylon cursed the school library again as he looked at the shelf in front of him. Ladders and stepstools had the amazing ability to disappear when he needed them. So he was now trying to decide on the best way to get the book he needed, about ten rows up.

“Can I be of assistance?”

Epsylon snapped his head in the direction of the voice. Sigma was standing down the aisle with a stack of books in her arms.

“Sure, can you get me a copy of World history?” he asked pointing up to the shelf it was on. “This library has something against short people” he added as he watched his classmate reach for the book. She was a really cool person, he liked how she, even though she was a whole head taller than him, never made him feel small. Everyone else always found a way to rub that in his face, but she just didn’t seem to mind. She had a really contagious smile too.

“Well this is embarrassing, it’s out of my reach” Sigma said after a moment of tiptoeing and stretching herself the tallest she could, the book was still just out of her reach. “Mind helping out?” she asked putting her books on a nearby table.

“How am I supposed to reach it if you can’t?” Epsylon asked as Sigma crouched down.

“By getting on my shoulders, come on” she said grinning at him.

“… but I’m heavy” Epsylon blurted out without even thinking. That didn’t even make sense, why had he said that? But it made her laugh.

“Yeah, I’m sure you weight a ton. Come on now” she told him.

Epsylon shrugged and tossed his books on the table next to hers. With help he got on her shoulder and took her hands as she held them up. “Alright, up we go” Sigma rose with ease and good balance. Epsylon was not quite ready for the sudden lift and squeezed her hands. She noticed.

“You doing okay?” she asked, looking up at him.

“I just realized how little I am” he mumbled through his teeth, making Sigma laugh again.

“Don’t be silly, you’re very average. Get your book now” she said. Epsylon slowly moved his hands from hers to the shelf. Sigma rested her hands on his feet as he got the book off the shelf.

“How am I gonna get down?” Epsylon asked, noticing the new challenge.

“Oh that’s easy, first give me the book” Sigma explained, he gave her to book and she put in on the table with the rest of them. “Now just give me your hands and-” as Sigma let go of Epsylon’s ankles, he let go of the shelf. He felt himself slipping of her shoulders, this was what he got for not listening till she was done talking. He waited to hit the floor but instead got yanked to a sudden stop.

He opened his eyes and found Sigma staring down at him, bewildered look in her eyes. Her eyes were so green. But she had caught him, somehow, and she was cradling him so close.

“N-nice catch…” Epsylon’s mumbled.

“Never thought cheerleading would be useful outside of rallying crowds at sport events” she seemed just as stunned as he was, a smile had snuck its way onto her face anyway.

“Please put me down…” he added, feeling his face grow hot.

“Oh, sorry!”

Once his feet were on the ground again Epsylon straightened his uniform and went and picked up his books. Sigma was still smiling to herself.

“How do you do that?” he asked.

“Do what?” She replied, taking her own books from the table.

“You just, you smile. A lot and all the time. You always look so happy, happy for no reason?” he tried to explain.

Sigma paused for a moment, pouting. Even when pouting the corners of her mouth were turned upwards and made it look like she was still smiling.

“I don’t know, I guess I just don’t see the point in being bitter when I can be happy.” she said making him chuckle. “Class starts in a bit so I have to go, see you later!” she waved goodbye.

“Thanks for the book!” he called after her, she turned back and smiled. But it was soft and… not as loud.

“Anytime!” she called back.

His heart skipped a beat, and he smiled back.

July-August, year 2040

Sigma was lying in her bed, the air was so stagnant, even though she had the window wide open. It would be a hot summer. She had her cellphone in her hand, trying to decide if she should text him or not. She’d fallen for him, for Epsylon. She was head-over-heels in love, like she had hoped to be but, what if he didn’t feel the same? She didn’t want to be rejected.

She had managed to talk one of Epsylon’s friends into giving her his cellphone number and she’d had it for days unsure of what to write to him. With a frustrated sigh she rolled over on her stomach and flipped her phone open, she typed out a short text and sent it before she could change her mind again.

Epsylon put his pencil down to poke at his cellphone where it sat next to his textbook.

Unknown nr: Big things come in small packages.

He stared at the text for a moment, wondering if it was a wrong number or some kind of joke. He leaned over the phone and typed out a reply with just his index finger then hit send.

ε: Who are you?

Unknown nr: It’s a secret.

ε: How did you get my number?

Unknown nr: Your friend gave it to me :)

ε: Which one of my friends?

Unknown nr: One of them ;D

ε: Okay so it’s a secret… what do I call you?

Unknown nr: Call me anything you like.

ε: Then I’ll call you Natsu P=

Epsylon went into the options for the unknown number and changed its title to Natsu.

Natsu: Natsu… I like that name :)

Epsylon didn’t know what to write back, so he left the phone lying next to his books, ‘Natsu’ didn’t text again that night.

Natsu: What is Hamasaki Epsylon doing tonight?

ε: I’m cleaning in the kitchen.

Natsu: Oh sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt you.

ε: I don’t mind. I’m done now anyway… Natsu, are you a boy or a girl?

Epsylon had been fishing for days, trying to figure out who this cellphone person was, they were super secretive. So now he resorted to playing something like 20 questions.

Natsu: I’m a girl.

ε:  and how old are you?

Natsu: I’m your age :3

That didn’t help him much. He had lots of friends, all his age, many were girls. He needed details, details this person refused to give. At least he knew a little more now.

Sigma stood in the backyard, filling up a small kiddy pool with water. The weather had gotten so hot she couldn’t stay inside anymore. She stepped into the tiny pool and sat down, sighing as the water cooled her body. She grabbed her phone, which she had stuffed in one of her shoes and took a picture of the sky. There was a single cloud floating by. She sent the picture to Epsylon.

ε: My sky looks the same.

She smiled at the reply, before tossing her phone to the side and sinking deeper into the little pool.

“Hey, do you guys know where this is?” Epsylon asked and showed a photo on his phones to his friends across the table, they were at a café. Over the past week he had chatted with Natsu almost every night, short conversations about nothing at all. Natsu had sent him another photo, asking him to guess where it was taken.

His friends looked at the photo. “Isn’t that from the north side of town? Like, it’s not exactly around our school but a few blocks away from it” one of them said and the other one nodded.

“Oh” Epsylon said looking at the photo again.

“Where did you get the picture form?”

“A friend sent it to me” Epsylon answered with a shrug, putting his phone back in his pocket.

“So why don’t you ask them where it’s from?”

“We’re kind of playing a game… hey, have either of you given my number to a girl?” he then asked but seeing the faces his friends made he just sighed. “Never mind…”

Epsylon spent the next week chasing photos Natsu sent him all over town. None of them seemed to give him more clues as to who Natsu was though. But it was so much fun, he had lived in Komatsu all his life but had never explored it like this.

Sigma sat in the bathtub when her phone played its short tune announcing a text had arrived. She wiped her hands on a towel and grabbed her phone to read the text.

ε: What might Natsu be doing?

Natsu: I’m taking a bath, what are you up to?

ε: I’m just watching TV with the family.

Natsu: Do you have a big family?

ε: Not really. Just mom and my older brother. Is Natsu’s family big?

Sigma looked at the text for a while. There was about a week left of summer vacation, she hated how she had planned to actually call him at the start of the summer but had ended up texting him like some crazy secret admirer.

Natsu: I have a mom and a dad.

Epsylon sat up straight in the sofa where he had been half lying next to his brother. If Natsu was telling the truth about having no siblings and being a girl, it narrowed down the amount of people it could be significantly, he could recall maybe a handful of girls his age that were only children and went to Shura gakuen.

ε: I’m gonna figure out who you are!

Natsu: I hope you do.

Sigma tossed her phone on the towel she had left folded on the floor and leaned on the edge of the tub. Her heart hurt, it was hard to secretly love someone.

Epsylon sat under the window in his small room. There was two short days left of summer vacation. He still hadn’t figured out who Natsu was. He liked Natsu, he wanted to meet her. His phone made a sound. He knew it was Natsu, she had her own ringtone now.

Natsu: Natsu can’t sleep.

ε: I can’t sleep either.

Natsu: I can’t stop thinking about you…

ε: I want to know who you are.

Natsu: Do you like Natsu?

ε: Sure.

Natsu: Because I love you, and I want you to like me back.

Epsylon paused. It clearly said ‘love’, Epsylon wasn’t sure how to respond. When he thought about liking someone, loving someone, Sigma’s image fell into his mind. He had liked her from the start. She was always happy and smiling for nothing, and even thought she was tall she somehow never made him feel small. Now Natsu was confessing her love for him, he didn’t even know who Natsu was. He liked her but not like he liked Sigma.

ε: Since when?

Natsu: Since the first time I saw you. I asked your friend for your number so I could call you. So I could talk to you. But I got scared and couldn’t do more than send dumb texts…

ε: So call me, we can talk…

Natsu: You don’t like me like that… do you?

ε: Sorry. When I think about it. I do like you but there’s someone I like more… sorry.

Natsu didn’t reply, Epsylon tried sending another text, then another and another. He lost count after seven and decided he should stop. Maybe she just needed to think for a bit. He needed to think to.

End of August, year 2040

School had started again, first day of the autumn term. Sigma stood under the staircase at the south end of their school, she had slipped a note into Epsylon’s locker asking him to meet her there, she had signed it ‘Natsu’, maybe that had been a dumb idea. But she really hoped he would come. She was squeezing her cellphone in her pocket, wanting to text him and say ‘never mind I was kidding’. But she couldn’t hold back anymore, she was awful at keeping secrets and this summer had been torture. Just finding out that he had someone else he liked made her want to cry. But she needed to tell him, face to face, that she liked him. Then she could move on.

The school was empty, everyone else was in the gymnasium to attend the opening ceremony. So when she heard footsteps down the hall she knew it was him. Epsylon rounded the corner and as soon as he laid his eyes on her he seemed to freeze up.

“S-sigma-san” he stuttered out, looking confused.

“Hi” Sigma said carefully.

“What are you doing here? Have you seen someone else around here?” Epsylon asked. She could see he was expecting someone else. It hadn’t even occurred to him that she could be Natsu and why would he? She had barely told him anything about herself.

“No, it’s just me. I’m the one wo left you the note…” Sigma said carefully smiling a little, she felt so awkward. “I have something I want to tell you…”

“Wait, stop!” Epsylon shouted and pointed at her. “That’s not right because it was Natsu that left the note and-” Epsylon stopped and pulled the note from his pocket waving the crumpled piece of paper in front of Sigma. “Did my friends put you up to this?!” he yelled. His friends loved teasing him. He was short and his fuse was even shorter. It was so typical of them to set up a prank like this. They knew about Natsu.

“What? No. I’m telling you I’m-” Sigma hurried to explain but Epsylon interrupted her again. This was going so wrong. Why was he so angry?

“Don’t! Okay? Just don’t! You’re good at acting but I figured it out so just stop it!” Epsylon ran his hands over his hair trying to calm down. Those guys were getting their asses kicked later, how could they?

“But… let me finish. No one put me up to this, I really love y-”

“I said shut up!! You’re in on it! They told you about Natsu and that I like you. I thought you were a nice person but you’re just…”

Sigma never cried. But it was all going so wrong, this wasn’t how she had imagined it at all. She couldn’t help but let the salty drops roll down her cheeks as he yelled at her. When he paused for breath, she hurried to interrupt.

“I’m Natsu!” she shouted, Epsylon paused. “I’m Natsu…” she said again in a sob. She rubbed the sleeve of her cardigan over her face clearing away the tears as she sobbed again.

“… You’re joking right?” Epsylon said after watching her for a moment. Sigma wanted to die, he didn’t believe her. She sank down on the floor and did her best to at least not start sobbing again. “Unbelievable…” Epsylon hissed, turning around to leave.

“Big things come in small packages!” Sigma shouted at him, he stopped. “Natsu… I like that name” she continued. “I’m a girl, I’m your age… do you like Natsu!?”

Epsylon winched. She was reciting Natsu’s text messages, he hadn’t show those to anyone. He swallowed to make the lump in his throat go away. “Because I love you and I want you to like me back!” she sobbed. Epsylon swallowed again and turned back towards Sigma. She’d never looked so small, sitting hunched over on the floor sobbing to her hands. He had messed up. Big time messed up. This is what he got for not letting her finish. He was awful.

“… I do” he mumbled, sounding dejected.

Sigma stopped mid-sob and looked up. Epsylon was staring at the floor between them, grinding his teeth. Somehow everything that had been said caught up to her.

They told you about Natsu, and that I like you.

She was the other girl! The one he had told Natsu he liked. The tears stopped right away; everything would be okay. She rubbed the sleeves of her cardigan over her eyes and cheeks one last time. Epsylon carefully stepped closer, hands balled up at his sides.

“Sorry… for yelling at you…” he mumbled, and she managed to catch his eye. She stood up without breaking eye-contact and held his hands firmly.

“I love you” she reaffirmed, more confident now.

“I’m sorry… I didn’t think-” Epsylon started on an apology for what he had said just minutes earlier, but Sigma grabbed his face and planted the softest kiss on his lips.

“I forgive you… I’m at fault to, I shouldn’t have made up Natsu, that’s was dumb. I should’ve been more honest… I just… I love you so much, I didn’t want to be rejected.” she said, and she was smiling again.

“I… I love you” he replied.

Tsubasa no Niwa

Tsubasa no niwa
Early August, year 2042

Tsukino groaned as she woke up again. She had stuffed her head under her pillows to shut out the sun that had started creeping into her room in the early hours. She would’ve pulled the covers over her head if she hadn’t kicked those to the floor sometime in the night because of the heat. This apartment was horrible in the summer. The sun had now traveled far enough to be cooking her entire bed.

“This is unbearable...” she muttered as she gave up and rolled out of bed. Tsukino took one of her pillows with her as she left the bedroom and walked into the living room. She laid down on the floor below one of the windows, a spot the sun hadn’t touched yet and sighed at the comfort of the cool floorboards.

She didn’t stay there for long, she was hungry and wanted breakfast. Roaming through the fridge in her tiny kitchen, she found some yogurt and an apple. In the freezer compartment she found the ice-cube tray empty, with only herself to blame, she filled it up and put it back before sitting down at the table with her breakfast.

● ● ●

Tsubasa left the bathroom, toweling his hair dry as he went back to his room. He dropped the towel on the floor and got some clothes from the closet. He dressed, throwing a glance at the alarm clock, 7.30am.

The house was dead quiet, his dad had probably left for work already. Tsubasa had fallen asleep in front of the TV waiting for him to come home last night and vaguely remembered someone throwing a blanket over him when it was still dark. He suspected it would be the same today.

He headed to the kitchen and was surprised by the smell of… something burning? He hurried the last few steps, stopping in the doorway. His dad was standing there, by the stove, making breakfast. Or something that was supposed to resemble it. He recognized the smell now, burnt pancake batter.

“Ohayou Tsubasa” Kyouji said without looking up. Tsubasa couldn’t help but smirk, his dad always got this funny look on his face when concentrating, his whole face screwed up like he had eating something sour.

“Good morning… I think you should flip it, it smells like it’s burning” Tsubasa replied making his dad panic and flip the pancake over, as his son had stated, it was burnt.

“Oh for the love of- it shouldn’t be this hard to make breakfast” Kyouji grunted taking the pan to the sink.

“Wait! You don’t have to throw it away!” Tsubasa protested but the pancake was in the sink and his dad stood with his eyes closed, frying pan in hand, as if trying to decide if he should just throw the pan in there to. “Here let me-” when Tsubasa tried to take the frying pan Kyouji moved it out of his reach.

“No, I’ll do it! Sit down and let me make you breakfast!”

Tsubasa held up his hands and Kyouji went back to the stove. Tsubasa sighed as he had a look at the table where he was supposed to sit. Egg shells, flour and sugar. Everywhere. He started cleaning up as Kyouji swore over another burnt pancake.

“Maybe you should lower the heat?” he suggested, his dad didn’t reply but Tsubasa could see him turning down the heat.

“Did you even go to sleep last night? You came home late” he continued as he wiped down the table.

“I slept on the sofa” Kyouji mumbled, flipping the new pancake over.

“I’ll set the table.”

“Don’t bother, I have to leave for work soon.”

Tsubasa paused at the cupboard. “Fine” he muttered, leaving to fetch the newspaper instead. He stopped at the potted plants by the gate to pull some weeds. He wished his dad wouldn’t work so much. Tsubasa felt like he had seen him more often when they still lived in Nomi. Komatsu was supposed to be different, he had promised. Promises were stupid.

He heard the door open and looked up, his dad was on his way out already.

“I’ll be home for dinner tonight, promise” Kyouji said when he saw the look on Tsubasa face.

“Don’t promise” Tsubasa muttered as he walked past him, throwing the newspaper on the dresser in the hallway.

“I worked late yesterday so I can leave early today, I’ll make dinner. I promise!” Kyouji clarified before hurrying out the gate. Letting out another sigh Tsubasa closed the door and headed back into the kitchen where a plate full of pancakes had been left for him on the table. As he sat down, he noticed his father had drawn a heart with jam and whipped cream on top. It was messy and sort of lopsided, but it made him smile.

After eating and cleaning up the remains of his dad’s breakfast adventure Tsubasa headed out to tend the garden. With this heat he had to make sure his plants didn’t dry up.

He went to the greenhouse first, pruning and watering the plants in there before rolling out the garden hose to water the trees as well. He soaked them top to bottom and played with the water, trying to create rainbows. After the trees were taken care of, he headed to the far end of the garden to care for eh vegetables and berries.

On his knees in the dirt, removing weeds, Tsubasa hummed along to the radio he had left sitting on the engawa veranda. He had opened all the sliding doors to the backyard to let in some fresh air, their house got stuffy quick. He heard the distant sound of the front gate opening, thinking it might be Uta stopping by before work, he just continued working. But a moment later the doorbell rang and he got up to see who it was, he tossed his gloves on the ground.

“In the backyard!” He called out as he hurried towards the front. Tsukino poked her head past the corner of the house.

“Tsu-Tsukino” Tsubasa stuttered out not at all ready to see his classmate.

“Good morning!” she said as she walked over to him. She had a light summer dress and sandals.

“What are you doing here?” Tsubasa asked still stunned. Surprise visits were not his thing, not even when he lived in Nomi had that happened, friends had always called or texted ahead.

“Well that’s a fine hello.” Tsukino laughed. “I thought I’d stop by and see what you were up to, I hope that was okay?”

“Yeah sure, sorry… you caught me a bit off guard…” he said scratching the back of his neck. He watched Tsukino as she walked past him, looking around the garden.

“I’ll make sure to text you next time.” Tsukino said softly, still looking around. “I know you’ve said you had a garden, but this is huge” she turned to Tsubasa again “You maintain all this by yourself?”

“Sure” Tsubasa answered and walked back down the path to the corner he had been weeding earlier.

“That’s amazing” Tsukino exclaimed making Tsubasa blush.

“Thanks, it’s not too hard though. Everything doesn’t bloom or need harvesting at once, so I have plenty of time to work with it” Tsubasa explained as Tsukino followed him. He got down on the ground again and she took seat on the wooden floor next to the radio. “What made you come here today?” Tsubasa asked as he put his gloves back on and started pulling weeds again.

“I was bored. I was going to the convenient store for some ice-cream but as I passed your house, I figured I could check in. I parked my bike in the front yard, I hope that was okay?” Tsukino said, she was swinging her legs back and forth.

“Yeah sure, do you still want ice-cream? We can make us some” Tsubasa said looking up to see Tsukino nodding wildly.

“Oh yes please, I’d love that” she said eagerly, making Tsubasa laugh.

“What flavor?” he asked as he picked a smaller basket from a storage cabinet under the engawa.

“Oh uhh… I don’t know, suggestions?” Tsukino asked watching him has he walked between the rows of small berry plants.

“The strawberries are good, I have raspberries and blackberries to” he started, putting up one finger for each berry he mentioned, “or would you like something like plum or peach?” he asked.

“Strawberry sounds good” Tsukino said not sure what to pick. She got up and walked over to Tsubasa where he sat, picking strawberries from a few plants. “Did the strawberry plant I got for my birthday come from this garden?” she asked, crouching down next to him.

“Kind of, this garden didn’t have strawberries so I bought a bunch and planted back in spring” Tsubasa answered Tsukino just nodded, she had been to plant nurseries before but seeing someone’s home garden was something else.

When he was done, they headed inside. Tsukino recognized the living room as they passed through it, she had seen it from the hallway when picking up Tsubasa for the beach trip last week.

“Doesn’t it take time to make ice-cream, I mean it has to freeze right?” She asked when they got to the kitchen.

“We have one of those freezer mixers that makes instant ice-cream” Tsubasa said gesturing for Tsukino to sit down at the table.

“Oh! I’ve seen those on TV, they seem really convenient to have, at least in the summer” Tsukino said as Tsubasa cleaned and prepared the berries. “What have you been up to lately?” she asked.

“Not much, gardening mostly. It’s been so hot lately I’m afraid my plants will die” Tsubasa said dropping diced strawberries in the mixer, Tsukino just nodded agreeing. “Other than that I’ve just been watching TV, a lot of TV. It makes the time pass” Tsubasa continued as he watched the mixer do its magic.

“Are you waiting for something?” Tsukino asked. The ice-cream was done and Tsubasa handed her a bowl before sitting down with his own.

“I don’t know, for dad to come home or something” Tsubasa shrugging.

“Does he work a lot?” Tsukino continued as she dug her spoon into the ice-cream, it was so soft.

“He likes working overtime I guess… and because of the traveling distance from here to the office he often stays in a hotel to save on the commute” Tsubasa mumbled hoping the little lie would pass, long commutes wasn’t really the reason his dad never came home.

“Ah I see” Tsukino just said putting a spoon full of the ice-cream in her mouth. “Oh my god. Tsubasa this ice-cream is amazing!” she cried making Tsubasa laugh.

“It’s just ice-cream.”

“Just ice-cream, this is not just ice-cream it is heaven!” Tsukino said pouting. “Best ice-cream I’ve ever had” she muttered going back to eating.

“D-don’t get angry, sorry!” Tsubasa apologized quickly, he worried he’d offended her.

“I’m kidding!” Tsukino hurried to reassure him. They finished eating and Tsubasa took the bowls to the sink to wash them. He told Tsukino she could have a look around the house if she wanted to, he didn’t want her to get bored.

Tsukino stepped into the living room again having a look around, furniture was neatly placed in groups, she noticed the blankets and pillows in the armchair and sofa. “Tsubasa, it’s not good for your back to sleep on the sofa!” she called out.

“I said you could have a look around, not evaluate my way of living!” Tsubasa called back making Tsukino chuckle.

She walked around the house, it was semi traditional with the engawa walkways and tatami mat flooring in most rooms. The living room and kitchen seemed to have been renovated with a more modern touch though.

When she was done touring, she peeked into the small room next to the living room. One of the doors stood ajar and she slid it open further, this room also had tatami mats. It looked like a study with shelves of books a couple of comfy looking chairs and reading lights. In the corner there was a butsudan, its doors stood open like they should and below the Buddha inside the cabinet there was a photo.

Tsukino decided to pay her respects and walked in, kneeling on the cushion in front of the small cabinet. She had to do a double-take when she saw the photo, at first it looked like Tsubasa but on second glance she saw it was a woman, they looked so similar.

She put her hands together and closed her eyes in a silent prayer. She sat there till she heard Tsubasa come into the room.

“Sorry, I invited myself.” She said as he sat down.

“That’s okay, I’m sure she appreciates the visit” Tsubasa told her as he did a small prayer himself.

“Who is it?”

“Kanna, my mom.”

Tsukino had thought so. He had said he looked like his mom. She had really hoped it wasn’t though.

“I’m sorry…” she mumbled. What was she supposed to say? What do you say to someone who didn’t have a mom?

Tsubasa cracked a smile, sheepish but honest.

“Don’t be sorry. It was a really long time ago, we’re fine!” Tsubasa told her, trying to put her at ease. Then he paused. “Can I explain something I said earlier… in the kitchen?” he said it quietly and Tsukino responded the same way.

“Sure…”

“So… about dad working overtime and not coming home… it’s really because I look like mom and he can’t deal with it… won’t deal with it.” Tsubasa threw a glance at Tsukino, she looked so lost. “sorry, now I just made it awkward… sorry…”

“N-no, it’s fine. I just don’t know what to say to that.”

“You don’t have to say anything. I just, I don’t like lying and I would’ve thought about it later…but what do we do next? I’m done with the garden.” Tsubasa felt like he had explained enough and wanted to move on.

“We could go to my place?” Tsukino suggested. “Maybe you could help me replant that strawberry plant you gave me? I bought stuff for it but I’m afraid I’ll hurt it if I do it by myself.”

“That would be fun! Just let me close up first” he said and got on his feet right away.

Tsukino sat for a minute, looking at Kanna’s photo. She thought she should appreciate her family more. She didn’t tell them she loved them often enough.

Tsubasa locked up the house and they walked up the hill towards Tsukino’s apartment building. Tsukino was leading her bike by her side and had started humming on a song. Tsubasa recognized it but couldn’t quite place it.

“What song is that?”

“Huh? Oh… Cherry Bomb, by Andromeda Effect” Tsukino told him over her shoulder.

“That’s the one” Tsubasa confirmed for himself, it was on the radio constantly.

“You listen to them?” she asked slowing down so they could walk side by side.

“Yeah, I really liked the Hummingbird album from last year” Tsubasa answered and Tsukino nodded in agreement.

“I like a lot of artists, but Andromeda Effect music is amazing, I have all of their albums, do you have an artist like that?” Tsukino asked and Tsubasa tilted his head to the side thinking about it.

“I guess io would be the one” he said after a while.

“She’s Korean right?”

“Yeah, but I listen to both her Japanese and Korean music, her voice is amazing” Tsubasa said, thinking about the rows of her albums he had stacked in a bookcase in his room. “Hey, isn’t Andromeda Effect’s new single released soon?” he added remembering seeing it on social media.

“Yeah, tomorrow actually.”

“Oh! Wanna go into town together and pick up the physical release?”

“Tsubasa~ are you asking me out on a date?” Tsukino grinned.

“What?! No! I mean- I was just wondering- You said they were your favorite- and I was going anyway… so I thought…” when Tsukino started laughing Tsubasa stopped his rambling, his face was hot.

“I was joking, of course I’ll go with you, I haven’t been on a date in a while” she said smiling.

“It’s not-” Tsubasa gave up with a huff. “I wish you wouldn’t do that” he mumbled, still blushing and his heart racing.

They idly chatted about their favorite artists for the rest of the walk. Tsubasa hadn’t really looked at the apartment building that day Uta dropped her off but now as they entered the parking lot he felt like a spoiled brat because the first thing he thought was that it was rundown and small.

“Mine’s the first one up the stairs” Tsukino said as she parked and chained her bike to one of the support poles of the building. Then she headed up the stairs, which seemed to give off a metallic creaking in protest every step she took. Tsubasa followed her and watched as she took a small keychain from her pocket and unlocked the door.

“No one home?” he asked as he followed her inside.

“Oh, no. My family doesn’t live here, it’s just me. I moved out here to be closer to school, my family lives in the city” Tsukino said and hung the keys on one of the hooks next to the door. She then set out a pair of slippers for Tsubasa. “Put these on, I haven’t vacuumed in a while” she said before stepping into her own pair. It was a small apartment. Joined kitchen and living room, the small hallway had two doors and the living room also had two doors, there was also a balcony. It all had a modern minimalistic style to it.

It was dark in the apartment, Tsukino had probably covered the windows to keep her home as cold as possible and Tsubasa’s eyes still hadn’t quite adjusted to the dim lighting.

“Looking for something?” Tsukino asked when she saw Tsubasa scanning her apartment.

“Just looking…” Tsubasa told her and walked over. She was pouring mineral water into two glasses. It was reaching lunch time and the sun was still scorching hot outside.

“Here” she said handing one of the glasses off to him.

“Thanks” he quietly replied taking the glass. He emptied the glass in one sweep, it wasn’t that far between their houses but in this heat the walk had made him thirsty. When he set his glass down Tsukino immediately refilled it. She was sipping on her own glass staring off at something far away.

“Can I see the strawberry plant?” Tsubasa asked after a moment of silent.

“Sure!” she replied quickly and headed past him to the balcony. “Since I always have the drapes closed, I figured I’d put it on the balcony so it could get all the sunlight it needs” she said.

“That’s good” Tsubasa agreed picking his glass up off the sink before following her.

When Tsukino opened the balcony door the hot humid summer air flooded into the apartment. It was a small balcony with room for three, maybe four, people to stand next to each other on it. “I put it here on the floor” she continued and walked outside pointing with her free hand, Tsubasa followed her and hung on the door frame as he looked at the monstrosity of a strawberry plant growing on the floor. He could barely believe this was the plant he had given her back in April.

“It’s huge!” he exclaimed and crouched down to have a closer look. It looked nothing like the ones in his garden.

“I know, is this normal? That’s why I thought I needed to replant it” Tsukino said sipping her water. Tsubasa just sat nodding as he looked over the plant. It was in really good condition, no pests or damage at all.

“Why don’t we transplant it now? I’ll show you how to do it” Tsubasa said looking up at her.

“Transplant?” Tsukino asked raising an eyebrow.

“Yeah, that’s what it’s called, when you move a plant to a new pot” he answered.

“Ah, let me get the things then” Tsukino said going back inside. She set her glass on the small table in the living room as she passed by it heading into the hallway. She opened the closet and pulled out the bag of fertilizer and the pot. She also grabbed some old newspapers that laid stacked there to make cleaning up easier. She hurried back out to the balcony where Tsubasa was waiting. She walked around him and sat down so that she was facing him, putting the things down.

Tsubasa lifted the potted plant off the ground as she laid out the newspapers.

“We’re gonna need water to” he said, Tsukino just nodded grabbing the small watering can that stood behind the door and ran to the kitchen to fill it with water. She liked this. She had been so worried Tsubasa would be all gloomy and sad after telling her about his mom, and his dad but he seemed okay. She was never sure what to do for her friends when they were upset, she always felt so paralyzed, unsure of what to say or do, afraid to do something wrong and make it worse. She liked hanging out with Tsubasa it would’ve been awful to end up all awkward.

She took the now full watering can out of the sink and went back to Tsubasa.

She watched as he carefully removed her strawberry plant from the pot. He had offered to let her do it but she was afraid to damage it. While Tsubasa freed the plant from its smaller housing Tsukino filled the bigger pot with some fertilizer. She watched as Tsubasa effortlessly removed dirt from around the roots before setting the plant into the bigger pot.

“You can add more fertilizer now, just pour it in lightly, don’t pack it” he said gathering up the dirt that had ended up outside the newspapers even though he had been careful. Tsukino did as told, she thought the strawberry plant looked much better in the bigger pot. When they were done transplanting the plant they cleaned up. Tsukino threw out the newspapers while Tsubasa watered the strawberry plant, then they both washed their hands in the kitchen sink.

Tsukino poured new mineral water in their glasses and brought them over to where Tsubasa was sitting on the floor under the window in the living room area.

“Here you go!”

“Thanks” Tsubasa took the glass and set it on the floor by his feet.

Tsukino crouched down next to him and leaned back against the wall. They were silent. Tsukino liked being silent with Tsubasa, it never felt odd to just sit around and do nothing with him. In school with her other classmates and friends it felt like they always had to talk to keep a good atmosphere but with Tsubasa she could just sit around.

Tsubasa phone started ringing, a cheerful tone that he answered and got up, taking a few steps away.

“Hello~”

Tsukino absently watched him as he leaned on the sofa, her eyes drifted to the balcony where the door still stood open, the concrete floor was still wet from the excessive amount of water Tsubasa had poured over the new pot, but apparently it was necessary. In this heat it would dry up in no time.

“… no I’m over at Tsukino’s… You forgot your keys? What about the spare in the mailbox?” Tsubasa looked at Tsukino as he listened to his sister, she looked small sitting on the floor like that, with her knees pulled up.

“Of course he would forget to put it back… no you don’t have to come up here I’ll just go home, dad actually promised to be home with dinner so maybe you could stay to?” Tsubasa was still looking at Tsukino when she looked up at him, she smiled. Tsubasa smiled back, shrugging his shoulders at his irresponsible family. Tsukino got on her feet as Tsubasa ended his call with his sister.

“So… I have to go home. Apparently, my family can’t get into their own house” he said with a grin. “About tomorrow, when would be a good time to meet up?” he then asked.

“I thought I could swing by your place around ten-ish? Is that okay, I’ll make sure to text ahead?” Tsukino said and Tsubasa just nodded.

“Sounds good!” Tsubasa said, Tsukino waved him off at the door.

He took the stairs down two steps at a time, he was in a good mood. The weather was much milder, a slight wind was rusting the leaves in the trees. He dared think this was, so far, the best summer he’d ever had. He had made lots of new friends, he had learned how to swim, his dad was, at least today, attempting to keep a promise and Tsubasa liked Tsukino a whole lot. She was great.

Upon realizing his last thought he froze in his steps.

How was he supposed to tell Tsukino that?

Umi ni Ikkou

Umi ni ikkou
Early August, year 2042

“Shit” Tsubasa hissed through gritted teeth as he tore another moving box from the closet where they’d been stashed half a year ago. He dumped its contents on the floor and started tossing through the things. “Where the hell are they?!”

“Hey. Watch the langua- what are you doing?”

Tsubasa looked up for a second to face his dad before going back to his search. The man had just come out of the kitchen with a coffee mug in his hand, looking puzzled.

“Well. You see. It slipped my mind, but we’re going to the beach today and since I still haven’t unpacked everything, I can’t find my swim shorts! Oh, and the bus leaves in like 10 minutes!” Tsubasa said as he tossed things aside. If Tsukino hadn’t texted him half an hour earlier he wouldn’t have remembered at all, he would still be on the couch, zapping through the channels.

“You’re going to the beach?” Kyouji asked and Tsubasa stopped for a moment.

“Yes, if I had remembered I would’ve told you… Finally!”

Tsubasa found what he was looking for and quickly stuffed the black swim shorts in the bag he had left on the sofa. He could feel his dad still watching him. “I’ll be gone all day, so you don’t have to make dinner or anything”.

“I see… Well, have fun. I have work today and have an early meeting tomorrow. I’ll probably stay at office so-”

“So you won’t be home when I get back, got it” Tsubasa finished his father’s sentence for him. It was an old story. He went through the things in his bag making sure he had everything. The doorbell rang and they both looked towards the door.

“Who’d come here this early?” Kyouji muttered and went to open the door. He hadn’t even reached the hallway before the door was opened from the outside and a pink-haired girl stepped inside.

“Ojamashimasu” she said closing the door behind herself. Kyouji stared, confused, as she saw him and quickly took a bow. “Pleased to meet you, I’m Tsukino Hana; Tsubasa’s classmate” she said cheerfully. Kyouji returned the polite gesture with a slow nod.

“Ta-Taiyouno Kyouji, Tsubasa’s dad...” he answered her then looked at Tsubasa who still stood in the living room, looking like a deer in headlights. Tsukino saw him and waved.

“Hi Tsubasa!”

“Hi, sorry let me just get my shoes, then we can go” he grabbed his bag and hurried to her, sitting down on the floor to tie his shoes.

While watching him Tsukino reached out and combed through his hair with her finger. Startled Tsubasa shrieked and covered his head with his hands.

“Wha-what are you doing?!” he stuttered out looking up at Tsukino who was trying not to laugh at his reaction. Kyouji had stepped out into the kitchen to hide, he could barely keep himself from snickering at Tsubasa reaction.

“Did I surprise you? Haha, sorry. I thought I could fix your bedhead” she laughed.

Tsubasa finished putting on his shoes, got up and looked in the mirror. He sighed at his hair and grabbed a brush to fix the mess. As they left his dad appeared in the doorway to the kitchen again.

“I’ll be home tomorrow!” he called to him. Tsubasa just nodded before closing the door behind himself.

“You and your dad are quite alike” Tsukino said as they walked down to the bus stop by the main road. They’d be meeting up with the others on the bus.

“Really? Most people who’ve met him ask if I’m adopted” Tsubasa muttered, he got all his looks from his mom, there was not a single thing about his appearance that resembled his dad. Kyouji was grey furred with green hair and brown eyes.

“You make the same face when surprised; I bet you got your jumpiness from him to” Tsukino said, Tsubasa smiled at that.

“You’re right” he answered.

They didn’t have to wait long for the bus and once they got on they found Sigma and Epsylon at the back.

“Hi guys” Sigma greeted, flashing her signature smile. Tsukino took seat on the right side of the bus, Tsubasa sat down on the same row but on the opposite side. Their two seniors were occupying the entire back row with their bags; Epsylon was using them as back support with his legs tossed over his girlfriend’s lap.

“Aren’t Kazu and Yoru coming?” Tsukino asked.

“Oh, they are. Apparently public transport isn’t good enough for Yoru, he’s having his driver give them a ride” Epsylon snorted looking up from his phone.

“Of course” she replied leaning back in her seat.

“So, anything exciting happen you these first few days of vacation?” the small boy continued, putting his phone away.

“Nope, homework and hung out with Mayura; we did some shopping and stuff” Tsukino said rolling her head to the left so she could look over at her friends.

“Please tell me you have some homework left” Epsylon said with slight concern, which made Tsukino laugh. She never left anything for last minute.

“Yes. Yes, I have some left. Like a couple of pages of math, I think. I’m saving that for a rainy day”

“Who spends their first week of well-earned summer vacation doing homework? You should have fun instead” Sigma scolded.

“But homework is fun” Tsukino muttered, earning disapproving looks from her friends. “it’s fun for me” she added after the moment of silence. Sigma who couldn’t hold a serious expression for more than a few seconds cracked up in a smile again and turned to Tsubasa.

“What about you Blue, what have you been up to?” she asked.

“Me? No-nothing much really, just gardening” Tsubasa said. He was sitting with his back turned to the window, legs out in the aisle so he could face his friends more easily.

“Gardening? Like flowers?” Sigma asked, curious.

“Fruits and vegetables” Tsubasa answered, scratching the back of his head as Sigma started asking about what he was growing and if she could buy some from him.

As the bus rolled into yet another stop Tsukino spotted her best friend and quickly called out to her.

“Mayura! Back here”.

“Hi guys” Mayura greeted when she arrived at the back of the bus, Tsukino got up so she could slide past her to the seat by the window. “I was sure I’d miss the bus. My sister had borrowed my bag again without telling me; couldn’t find it anywhere” she said.

“That sucks, my brother borrows my stuff like that to” Epsylon noted.

“Same. Akiko always took my stuff without asking before I moved to the apartment” Tsukino added. “She probably still does, I just don’t notice since I’m never home”.

Sigma listened to the three complain about their siblings and pouted.

“Why am I the only one without siblings to fight with?” she exclaimed causing everyone to laugh. “Wait! Tsubasa aren’t you an only child?”

“Actually, I have a sister…”

“What~? I was sure you were an only child, you don’t seem like the type to have siblings” Sigma pouted again for a moment.

“Sorry Sigma-san” he smiled apologetically.

“Oh well, at least I have Yoru” Sigma comforted herself, shrugging. “What’s your sister like, what’s her name?” she then asked as she leaned forward.

“Uhh… I think I have a photo…” Tsubasa scrolled through his phone. “Her name’s Uta, she’s super nice, spoiled me way too much when we were kids so I can still talk her into doing or buying stuff for me… here” He held up the phone so Sigma could see more easily.

“Wow, the two of you look so different from each other! Is she older?”

“Yeah, she’s 9 years older.”

“9 years?! That’s a lot. Do you get to see her often? I mean, you moved to a different city and all…”

“She actually moved to Komatsu a few years ago, so now I get to see her plenty” Tsubasa felt weird talking so much about his family, but Sigma had such a knack for just keeping conversation going.

“Let me see to! Does she look like your dad?” Tsukino had caught onto their conversations and was leaning out of her seat to see what was on Tsubasa’s phone. Somehow, in the short minute he’d been talking to Sigma both Mayura and Tsukino had done up their hair. Tsukino had low twin-tails, that with her thick and curly hair looked like pompoms sticking out below her ears. He thought she looked cute.

“Uta doesn’t look like dad either” He laughed as he held out his phone for Tsukino to look. As she did, she found that Tsubasa’s sister was a purple fox. She had brown hair and yellow eyes.

“No kidding, neither of you look at all like your dad” Tsukino was amazed by how different the three of them looked, she and her siblings all resembled their parents very obviously.

“Well, I look like mom and Uta is adopted so…” Tsubasa kind of trailed as he revealed why none of them looked alike.

“Your parents are such good people!”

Their conversation trailed off and they all settled back. Tsubasa sat leaned against the window and found that his eyes kept fixating on Tsukino’s hair, the pink curly pompoms. It suited her, she looked cute.

“Tell her”

Tsubasa jumped at the sudden whisper from his senior. He eyed back between the seat and the window to see Epsylon peering at him with a knowing smile on his face. “What?” Tsubasa whispered back.

“Tell her you think it’s cute” Epsylon urged, Tsubasa immediately felt his cheeks heat up. Was he that transparent and readable? “Go on” Epsylon told him.

“I-I don’t know…” Tsubasa hesitated. He wasn’t good with compliments.

“She’ll appreciate it” Epsylon assured him and Tsubasa turned to his pink haired friend, swallowing his fears.

“Tsukino” he paused long enough for her to look over at him, “having your hair like that suits you” he blurted out, leaving her staring at him for a few seconds. Tsubasa had just enough time to start wishing he was dead when she broke into a smile.

“Thank you!” She said softly, it made Tsubasa smile to. That was worth the embarrassment. Tsukino always had a tense or annoyed look about her at school, mostly because of Yoru. It was nice to see her smile.

When they got off the bus in the parking lot Yoru and Kazu were already there waiting for them.

“Took you guys long enough, we’ve been waiting for half an hour” Yoru told them when they met up.

“Not our fault that you decided to come early” Tsukino muttered, Yoru grinned at her and reached out flicking one of her twin-tails.

“That is totally cute on you” he said.

“Thanks…” Tsukino didn’t appreciate Yoru’s compliment as much as Tsubasa’s.

“Are there changing rooms around here somewhere?” Tsubasa asked and Mayura grabbed his arm.

“Yeah this way, I need to change to so I’ll show you” she said and pulled Tsubasa off with her.

“We’ll meet you guys down at the beach okay?” she called back to the others.

While Tsubasa and Mayura got changed the other’s headed down to the white sanded beach. The weather was great, not a cloud in the sky and the wind just a light breeze. They all dumped their bags in a pile by the path.

“I brought a volleyball, thought it would be fun to play some” Kazu said holding it up.

“Cool, let’s play when Tsubasa and Mayura-san get back” Epsylon said as he helped Sigma undo the zipper on her dress. Tsukino was first to step in the ocean and tossed herself head first into the knee-deep water.

“The water is great!” she called out when she resurfaced. The other four joined her.

“Hey, you meanies! You started without us!” Mayura called down to them when she saw everyone in the water. She grabbed Tsubasa by the hand and ran down the last few meters to the beach. She tossed her bag and Tsubasa managed to drop his before he was pulled down to the water by his excited friend. As soon as the water hit his feet he stopped dead in his tracks and yanked his hand out of Mayura’s. Surprised by the sudden halt, Mayura looked back, “Is it too cold for you?” she asked as she watched him walk up to the bags and sit down in the sand.

“N-no, but someone has to watch our stuff” Tsubasa said giving her a smile, hoping she’d buy it. Mayura just shrugged and headed out in the water, to Tsukino who had been watching them.

“What’s up with Tsubasa?” Tsukino asked when Mayura reached her. The blue fox looked back again. It looked sad, him sitting there alone.

“I don’t know. He just froze when we got to the water, said he’d watch our stuff” Mayura said tilting her head to the side.

“Oh I know what that is” Tsukino said wading back to the beach.

“Of course you do!” Mayura called after her before joining the others as they practiced passing the volleyball to each other.

“Hey, you” Tsukino called out when she got onto the sand again, Tsubasa looked up. “Boring person over there, why aren’t you playing with us?” she asked and walked over to him.

“Well… someone has to watch the stuff” Tsubasa said avoiding eye contact.

“No you don’t, you need to have fun with us, come on now” Tsukino said urging him to stand up. Tsubasa got on his feet and let himself be dragged down to the water again but Tsukino stopped there letting go of his arm.

“If I teach you how to swim will you play with us?” she asked looking back at him. Tsubasa was stumped. How did she know that he couldn’t swim? He hadn’t told anyone.

“Don’t look so surprised. Not being able to swim is super common. But it’s not hard to learn, come on” Tsukino said walking out into the water again.

“O-okay” Tsubasa answered and quickly followed her. He wasn’t scared of water, he just didn’t want to make a fool of himself. The only reason he couldn’t swim was because he’d never been taught… and his dad was overprotective. But Tsukino was offering so why not at least give it a try? They waded out together till they stood waist deep in water. Tsukino dived and quickly resurfaced just a few feet away.

“Your turn” she said wiping her bangs from her face.

“Huh?”

“Dip!” she laughed and splashed water at him with both hands. Tsubasa backed up in surprise and tripped over his own feet. He went under the surface with a loud splash. He felt so clumsy. It only took a few seconds before there was a hand clamped around his right arm that pulled him up again.

“I hope you held your breath. Sorry, that was a bit mean of me” Tsukino said, previous amusement all gone from her voice. Tsubasa found his footing and stood up.

“I’m fine. What next?” he asked excitedly, wiping his hair from his face. It made her smile again.

Closer to the beach in the shallow water the others were getting good at passing the volleyball between themselves. Yoru was having trouble concentrating though, he was busy watching Tsukino and wishing he couldn’t swim.

“Yoru-kun, watch out!” Mayura shouted. Yoru turned just in time to get hit on the shoulder by the volleyball she had passed him. He lost his balance and fell backwards landing in the water with a splash.

“Sorry!” Mayura called and Sigma picked up the ball as Kazu helped Yoru up.

“You good?” he said with an amused smile. Yoru just glared at him as he combed his wet hair with his fingers.

“We’re back!” Tsukino said as she and Tsubasa came walking back to the shore.  Tsubasa looked a lot happier than before.

“That was fast” Mayura said.

“Yeah Tsukino is a really good teacher” Tsubasa agreed.

“I know right?  She taught me to.” Mayura said cheerfully.

“Wow, we could’ve used you on our field trip last year.  Not even half our class knew how to swim” Epsylon commented.

“You guys give me too much credit, you two were easy to teach” Tsukino laughed catching the volleyball as Sigma tossed it to her.

They all played together for a while before a few headed to the beach to dry off in the sun. Yoru and Sigma kept racing each other in the water, Sigma easily won each time and Yoru refused to give up.

Tsubasa really liked this, he couldn’t remember the last time he played with his friends back in Nomi like this.

Epsylon suggested they’d check out the salt caves since Tsubasa had never been there. Yoru and Kazu immediately refused, Tsubasa thought it was amusing how they were afraid of bugs. Sigma also passed on the caves and headed for the beach with the other two boys.

“I don’t really see any bugs” Tsubasa said as he followed Epsylon into the cave, his eyes adjusting to the dark.

“Yeah well, if those two see just one snail or crab they’ll run away screaming” Epsylon answered making Tsubasa laugh.  “Here we go, watch your head” Epsylon said and ducked through a small entrance.  Tsubasa followed, and stood once he was inside. He found himself in a small white room; everything was covered in salt crystals – even the air tasted salty.

“Wow, this is so cool” Tsubasa whispered, there were holes in the cave roof which let in more light.

“Sigma usually makes necklaces out of these and sells them at festivals” Epsylon said as he searched the wall for bigger crystals.  “Help me collect some, I’m sure Mayura and Tsukino would like some to.”

The two spent a good while collecting before swimming back to the beach, hands full of salt crystals.  When they got back the others were still sunbathing, Mayura had a big hat covering her head and Kazu was reading a book.  Sigma was laying on her stomach, drawing circles in the sand with a finger.  Epsylon snuck up on her and with a grin tossed himself on top of her making her squeal.

“Oh my god, that’s cold!” Sigma cried and shot up on her knees, Epsylon quickly wrapped his arms and legs around her so he wouldn’t fall off.

“That’s cruel Epsylon-san” Tsukino laughed, it was rare to see Epsylon goof off like that and everyone watched as Sigma tried to shake her drenched boyfriend off.

“You’re ice cold! Please~ let go of me” Sigma begged and he finally dropped down in the sand.

“Haha sorry, I had to… we come bearing gifts though, hold out your hands” Epsylon laughed as he gave Sigma all the salt crystals he had collected.

“These look great, you’re forgiven, thank you so much!” Sigma exclaimed rolling the crystals in her hands.

“Where’s Yoru?” Epsylon asked after looking around and not finding him.

“He went back to change and fetch us some firewood” Kazu said picking a crystal out of Sigma’s hand. “Mind if I take one?” he added, Sigma just shook her head.

Tsubasa had sat down in the sand between Tsukino and Mayura. “I picked some for you guys too” he said and emptied one hand of crystals on each of the girls’ towels. “Aww, thank you Tsubasa-kun” Mayura said and gathered up the crystals to put them in her bag.

“Hey…” Tsukino’s voice made him look over to her, she waved at him to lean closer and when he did she grabbed his shoulder and pulled herself up, putting her face so close to his that her lips touched his cheek when she spoke, “thanks” she whispered, before leaning back with a grinning.

Tsubasa didn’t know what to do, he knew his face was red so he just mumbled out a quiet “you’re welcome”.

“Hey!” hearing the angry shout they all looked up to see a bound stack of firewood come flying and land just a few feet from where Tsukino, Tsubasa and Mayura sat, making the sand splash on them. It was Yoru who had thrown it. “What did I tell you about stealing her from me?!” Yoru shouted. Tsubasa flinched and Tsukino shot up to sitting.

“I’m not property Yoru! Stop being so possessive, I’m not yours!” she yelled back. “Are you crazy what if that had hit us?” she then added pointing at the stack of wood.

“Okay!” Sigma used her cheerleader voice and clapped her hands together. Stopping Tsukino and Yoru mid-fight. “No fighting” she scolded waving with a finger, “those who fight will go without dinner.”

“Why don’t you guys go get change and when you get back, we’ll have the fire going” Kazu said and Mayura agreed.

The girls went to the changing hut and when they got back the fire was lit. They let the guys go get changed as well and had Yoru help them roll some logs up to the fire for all of them to sit on. Sigma and Epsylon stood for the food, which was a noodle wok Sigma had prepared. They ate and planned a trip to Kaga. They had dessert to and before they knew it the sun was setting. Tsukino noticed how low the sun was and pulled her phone from her pocket to check what time it was.

“Crap!” she exclaimed.

“What?” Mayura asked.

“Our bus left like five minutes ago” Tsukino sighed making the orange-haired girl scramble for her own phone only to see the bus had indeed left.

“… How are we gonna get home now? My parents will never drive out here to get us” Mayura said, looking a little worried.

“I guess I could have Nishimura drive you all home, it would be a detour though…” Yoru said, making it sound like he was making a great sacrifice.

“That’s okay, I can call Uta she lives in the area” Tsubasa said pulling his cellphone from his pocket. Yoru leered at him for a moment before letting out a huff.

Tsubasa stepped away for a couple of minutes while making the call.

“We have a ride” he said as he put his phone away, making the two girls smile. Tsukino was extremely grateful she didn’t have to ride with Yoru.

“Let’s clean up and put out the fire then” Sigma said and got up.

They all cleaned up and made sure the fire was put out properly. Then went back to the parking lot. With no benches to sit on, they all took seat on the fence instead and waited for their respective ride. Sigma and Epsylon had already left. They were going to stay in Sigma’s family’s summer house for a few days, it was only a few hundred meters from the parking lot.

Yoru’s driver showed up first, in his shiny car, cruising in and parking. Yoru and Kazu got off the fence and headed for the car. “See you guys next week!” Kazu called to the others before getting in the car after Yoru.

“Yeah! We gotta do some more planning for Kaga!” Mayura called back waving as the limo drove off.

“Would that be Uta?” Tsukino asked pointing to the dark convertible rolling in just as the Yoru’s car left.

“Yeah” Tsubasa replied as the car came to a stop in front of them. Uta stepped out and Tsukino thought she was much prettier in person than in that photo Tsubasa had showed on the bus.

“Have you been waiting long?” Uta asked as she gave Tsubasa a quick hug.

“Forever” he replied jokingly and Uta turned to Tsukino and Mayura.

“And you two much be the friends. Hello, nice to meet you both. I’m Uta, Tsubasa’s older sister.” she said all this in a very sing-song tone and Tsukino could tell she was teasing Tsubasa. Having younger siblings was great.

“My name is Tsukino and this is Mayura” Tsukino quickly introduced them both.

Uta smiled before leaning closer to her brother again, whispering “those are some pretty friends you have.”

“Stop that!” he snapped at her, face red.

“Oh lighten up. How about we hop in the car and get you guys home?” Uta said gesturing towards the car.

Uta dropped Mayura off at a shuttle station, she would take the train back into the city because she didn’t want Tsubasa’s sister to have to drive across town. After that Uta drove Tsukino home to her apartment.

“Thank you for the ride, Uta-san. See you next week Tsubasa” Tsukino said as she got out of the car.

“Yeah, I’ll see you later” Tsubasa called back as Tsukino headed up the stairs to her apartment building. When they had driven off Uta glanced over at her younger brother.

“How was your day?” She asked which immediately earned her a smile.

“It was great, we had a lot of fun” Tsubasa answered.

“You just sat on the beach all day, didn’t you?” Uta said rolling her eyes.

“I can swim” Tsubasa said sounding very proud.

“Really? Since when?” his sister asked in surprise, she was always the last to know stuff now that she didn’t live at home anymore.

“Since today, Tsukino taught me.”

“Oh really~ do you like her?” Uta asked, she had to pry. She couldn’t help it, it was her job as the older sister.

“She’s nice.”

“Like, like her” Uta clarified to remove all loop holes to her question.

“I don’t know… you know I’m bad at that stuff” Tsubasa said tiredly.

“A little maybe?” Uta pushed a little further, soon he’d start yelling at her for asking too much.

“Maybe…” Tsubasa answered, making Uta smile.

“Well, aren’t you growing up nicely” she hummed to herself.

June, year 2042

The school cafeteria was packed, Tsubasa was glad he and the girls had managed to find a table so easily. He juggled the beeper in his hands as he half-heartedly listened to what they were talk. The cafeteria at his old school had always been half empty, no one went there since it didn’t offer much. This one was more like a restaurant, people even lined up before it opened to get in early. As he looked around, he saw Sigma over in one of the lines, she was easy to spot since she was so tall.

“Earth to Tsubasa”

The clear call for his attention had Tsubasa looking back at the girls sitting across the table.

“You’re not adopting Tsukino’s habit of spacing out, are you?” Mayura asked with an amused look on her face. Tsubasa blushed and shook his head.

“What were you looking at?” Tsukino asked as she looked over in the same direction where Tsubasa had been so fixated.

“I saw Sigma-senpai” he replied, leaning on the table and placing the beeper in front of him.

“I see her to” Tsukino commented as she followed their green-haired senpai moving slowly with the line.

“Hey since summer is around the corner and all” Mayura began, grabbing her friends’ attention again. “Why don’t we invite her and Epsylon-senpai somewhere? Like we did last year, that was fun. Maybe Yoru-kun and Kazu-senpai could come along to!”

“Sure, but do we really have to bring Yoru along?” Tsukino said with disdain. Yoru’s behavior towards her had been escalating lately. He had even started being nasty to Tsubasa for no reason.

The beeper Tsubasa had left on the table sprung to life with its high-pitched beeping, indicating their food was ready to be picked up. The three headed over to the counter and deliberately detoured past the line to talk to Sigma. They found Epsylon was with her as well.

“Hello my lovely kouhais~” Sigma sang cheerfully, Epsylon just rose a hand in a quite hello.

“We have free seats at our table if you want to join us” Tsukino suggested.

“That would be great Tsukino, it’ll save us time, thank you!” Sigma replied.

After picking up their food, the three returned to the table and were soon joined by Sigma and Epsylon. Epsylon sat next to Tsubasa and Sigma seated herself next to Tsukino.

“It feel like forever since we lunched together, it was so much easier last year” Sigma said.

“I know, our classes aren’t lining up as well” Mayura agreed. “We were just talking about going somewhere this summer, we wondered if you guys wanted to come with us again” she added.

Tsubasa quietly ate his food as he listened to the others toss ideas back and forth, places to go, things to see. He hadn’t been around muc, Nomi wasn’t too far from Komatsu, but his family had never been much for vacations. Usually he just went up to his grandparents’ farm in Tsubata for a few weeks every summer.

Tsubasa suddenly became aware that someone’s foot was on top of his, he looked up from his food, swallowing slowly. No one seemed to be trying to get his attention.

He tried to go back to eating, but then the foot went up his leg and he shot out of his chair. It toppled over with a loud crash and everyone around the table startled.

“Bikurishita!” Epsylon yelped, he had almost jumped from his own seat when Tsubasa’s crashed to the floor.

What happened?” Mayura asked wide-eyed.

“No… No-nothing I just-” Tsubasa couldn’t make words form properly. He was so flustered by what happened, embarrassed. He stared at the floor not sure what to do. He hated this, no one was saying anything.

“Sorry”

Tsubasa snapped his head up, it had been Sigma talking and she had a sheepish smile on her face.

“Th-that was you?!” Tsubasa spluttered as she started laughing with her hands covering her face.

“I’m so sorry” she laughed, still with her face in her hands.

“Can anyone fill the rest of us in?” Tsukino asked waving with her chopsticks.

“Si-Sigma-san was… she-” Tsubasa still couldn’t talk properly so Sigma said it for him.

“I was toe flirting with him...” she sighed and let her hands fall to the table.

“Sigma!” Epsylon exclaimed as Mayura and Tsukino burst out laughing.

“Not intentionally! I was aiming for you” Sigma laughed to. Tsubasa thought they were too amused by this.

“How could you miss, I’m across from you! Stop laughing it’s not funny!” Epsylon scolded the girls before turning to Tsubasa who was still standing. “I’m so sorry, here sit down” he didn’t find it amusing either, Tsubasa looked so uncomfortable, he helped to pick up his chair.

Tsubasa took his seat, face still beet red he tried to concentrate on finishing his meal.

“What were we even talking about, I’ve completely lost track?” Mayura asked.

“Beaches” Tsukino pointed out, as she scooped the last of the fried rice from her bowl.

“Oh yeah, Tsubasa you’re okay with going to the beach, right?”

“Sure, that sounds fun” Tsubasa agreed, anything would be fine if he got to hang out with his friends.

“Okay, beach it is. Which one though. I’d love to go to one that isn’t too crowded but actually has sand and not rocks…” Tsukino said.

“Epsylon and I were planning on borrowing my parents’ summer house down by the salt beach, the sand there is usually pretty great” Sigma said and Tsukino nodded.

“I love that beach!” Mayura exclaimed. “Have you ever been there Tsubasa?” she then asked, pulling Tsubasa into the conversation. He’d rather just listen. But this group was so chatty he was always asked for opinions.

“No, my family isn’t very big on vacations.”

The girls went on to talking about buying new swimsuits, planning for a shopping day. Tsubasa finished his plate and Epsylon was silently tracing Yoru and Kazu moving through the cafeteria.

“Hey Tsukino-san? You might wanna duck. Yoru at 10 o’clock” he said and Tsubasa saw Tsukino sliding down on her chair immediately. It was too late though, he had already spotted her.

“Tsukino-chan, I almost didn’t see you there” Yoru said when he got to the table. Tsukino sat back up as he pulled up a chair next to her, Mayura quickly moved her chair to the left to make room for him. Kazu sat down to the right of Tsubasa on the other side of the table.

“Sandwiches guys? Really?” Sigma asked when she saw the poor lunch they both had chosen.

“Yes, sandwiches. Have you seen the line today?” Yoru said stuffing one of the salmon filled sandwiches in his mouth.

“You guys haven’t even gotten your food yet, we won’t have time to eat if we line up” Kazu agreed with Yoru. Just then the couple’s beeper went off and they hurried to go get their food.

“Oh, tell them about the beach!” Sigma called back to the group left at the table before catching up to Epsylon.

“The beach?” Yoru said, his words muffled because of the food he still had in his mouth.

“Don’t talk with your mouth full” Tsukino told him, anything she disliked, irritated her twice as much when Yoru did it.

“We’re going to the beach with Sigma-san and Epsylon-senpai, do you two also wanna come?” Mayura explained, Kazu and Yoru lit up.

“That would be awesome” Yoru said brushing breadcrumbs from his fingers. “Which beach? If you haven’t decided I know a pretty neat one”

“We’ve decided on the salt beach. It’s close by and Sigma and Epsylon were going there already” Tsukino said and watched both Yoru and Kazu shudder.

“Come on, you could’ve picked somewhere nicer” Yoru said wrinkling his nose.

“That beach is gorgeous. If you don’t like the caves, don’t go in the caves” Tsukino argued. Epsylon and Sigma were back, sitting down with their trays. Tsubasa leaned over to Epsylon whispering;

“Why doesn’t Kazu-senpai and Yoru-senpai like the salt beach?”

“What? Oh, the caves at that beach are full of bugs” Epsylon answered with amusement in his voice.

“How are you two so scared of insects?” Tsukino asked, the two older boys just pouted.

“We went there for a school trip during our first year, they refused to go into the caves” Epsylon continued.

“It’s not funny!” Kazu protested loudly rubbing his arms. “Just thinking about those things gives me goosebumps!”

Yoru had abandoned the conversation and was scooting his chair closer to Tsukino.

“You’re invading my personal space” she said and Yoru grinned.

“Aww, you’re just playing hard to get Tsukino-chan, you know deep down that you want me” he laughed.

“Do you have a hearing problem? Or does your brain just work backwards?” Tsukino asked crossing her arms over her chest.

“See, you just want me to charm you some more, don’t you?” Yoru continued to tease Tsukino who was getting more and more agitated.

Sigma and Kazu exchanged glances, at this point they were Tsukino’s bodyguards when Yoru took it too far. She was good at deflecting his advances though.

“Oh if I was even remotely interested, I’d be the one charming you” Tsukino countered.

“Really, how would that go?” Yoru asked excitedly, inviting Tsukino to show him. She narrowed her eyes at him. Should she play along? “Come on, show me, how would you charm me?” he egged her on. Tsukino leaned over the few inches between them, her face right in front of Yoru’s.

“If I was into you I’d be up in your personal space, trying to get your attention” she said, careful not to let her guard down, she was walking a fine line.

“What would you do to get my attention?”

He was playing her, she was doing just what he wanted her to and she knew it. But that also meant his guard was down. Tsukino got out of her chair and stood behind Yoru, she placed her hands on his shoulders and leaned forward. Everyone just watched.

“If you want me so bad…” she said slowly in a low voice, seeing Yoru’s ear twitch under her breath. “If you want me that bad…” she said again and lifted one of her hands off his shoulders. The others were watching silently, Sigma and Kazu were ready to jump in the minute something went wrong.

“… THEN WHY WON’T YOU BE MORE MATURE ABOUT IT?!” Tsukino yelled and smacked Yoru over the back of the head. Tsubasa had almost jumped out of his skin at Tsukino’s sudden shout. Yoru was just grinning, enjoying himself way too much as Tsukino took her seat again with a huff.

“So, about the beach” Kazu quickly moved on to lighten the mood around the table again. “When should we go there?”

“First week of August maybe, just to get it out of the way?” Mayura suggested.

“Sounds good” Epsylon agreed, Sigma also nodded.

“Works for me, what about you Tsubasa?” Tsukino said and Tsubasa looked up.

“… Uhh yeah… sure it works” Tsubasa agreed he was still jittery, this has not been a good lunch break.

Tsubasa let himself watch Tsukino for a moment longer, she was busy talking to Mayura. His eyes landed on her right ear, she still had a small scar left from the piercing she had done on her birthday. It had been a present from Yoru. In the end she had to remove it because it hurt too much and got infected.

“Hey! Stop looking at what’s mine!” Yoru suddenly spat and Tsubasa startled, his heart couldn’t take much more of this.

“I haven’t done anything!” Tsubasa yelped and saw Tsukino hit Yoru on the arm.

“I’m not a thing, and I’m not yours!” she told him through gritted teeth.

“I’d pick Tsubasa over you any day, without event thinking about it” she said making Tsubasa stare at the table as his face flushed.

“Hey, what the hell does he have that I don’t?!” Yoru cried out.

“Respect for her!” came a unanimous answer from the whole table.

“…” Yoru had no comeback to that. He clicked his tongue and crossed his arms over his chest and went back to balancing the chair on its rear legs. Tsukino hoped that he would tip it too far and fall, maybe she should help him?

“Sorry to break up the party but class starts in ten minutes” Kazu said as he got out of his seat.

“Already, I still have another 20 minutes” Epsylon whined. Sigma was also out of her chair, tray in one hand.

“Yeah, sorry Hama-chan I should’ve taken biology with you instead of chemistry” she said leaning down to him. He kissed her gently on the lips.

“Hey Yoru, 7 minutes” Kazu said looking at his phone.

“Eh, I’ll stay here and hang out with Tsukino-chan some more. You can cover for me, right?” Yoru suggested jokingly as he got up.

“Yoru, 5 minutes…” Kazu nagged impatiently, wishing his friend would hurry up.

“Fine, fine… See you guys later” Yoru said then paused; “Hey Tsubasa, if I find out that you’re trying to steal Tsukino-chan from me I’ll be very unhappy” he threatened, narrowing his eyes in a playful manner. He turned, hurrying to catch up with Kazu and Sigma who had already left.

“I’m not your property!” Tsukino called after Yoru who just waved at her over his shoulder.

“That was nice” Epsylon commented making the juniors turn to him.

“I’m sorry?” Tsubasa asked, how had that threat been nice?

“He called you Tsubasa” Epsylon said matter-of-factly.

“Ah, you’re right. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Yoru call Tsubasa as anything by ‘you’ before” Mayura pointed out.

“What does that mean?” Tsubasa asked not sure if he wanted to know the answer.

“Don’t look so scared Tsubasa” Epsylon laughed, “It just means that you’re one Yoru’s short list now. His short list of people he considers friends.”

“He should treat his friends better” Tsukino muttered.

April 8th, year 2042

Tsukino let her forehead hit the window with a soft ‘thud’, looking out at the passing cars, she smiled to herself. She was on her way to school, on the bus. Her family had called this morning to tell her happy birthday and she was excited. Her mom was back home and would be staying for the whole week.

Her blissful mood was ruined by a sudden chill running down her back. Someone was touching her hair. She whipped around to face the person, not surprised to see who it was.

“Good morning, Kasugawa-kun” she said coldly and Yoru pouted, pulling his hand back. Using his last name was one of her few defenses, sadly it wasn’t always effective.

“Good morning Tsukino-chan~” he replied gleefully, she cursed his good mood.

“Look if you’re going to sit there, would you at least not sit on my bag?” she asked and Yoru glanced down to the bag that was under his knee.

“Sure” Yoru put the bag on the floor and sat down. “So, I heard it’s someone’s birthday today” he said, playfully pinching and tugging on Tsukino’s ear. What was his deal with her ears?! Tsukino shook her head to make him stop, he let go and rested his hand on her shoulder instead. “Happy Birthday!” he exclaimed, Tsukino rolled her eyes at him before turning back to the window.

“You know, I took a detour just for you.” He continued.

“Oh, you shouldn’t have” Tsukino replied sarcastically, refusing to look at him. Ignoring him never worked but she didn’t want to encourage him by paying attention.

“I wanted to catch you before school, I have a present for you!”

“Whoa, as much as I appreciate gifts I do not want one from you” Tsukino protested and turned to face him. Yoru’s hand was off her shoulder, his knuckles brushing against her cheek. “Would you stop touching me? It’s making me really uncomfortable…”

“Oh come on, it’s not a big thing. I just want you to come with me to my favorite piercing place and get your ear pierced” Yoru told her, completely ignoring her protests.

“No.” Tsukino planted her hand right in his face, pushing him away from her. He was being absurd. She pushed past him to get off the bus. They had arrived at school.

“It’s just the one ear, you’d look pretty with a piercing, come on” Yoru insisted as they got off.

“Tsukino!”

They both looked up, seeing Mayura waiting at the gate. Because of her long commute Mayura was always early. Yoru ran ahead of Tsukino and quickly threw an arm around the fox girl’s shoulders, waiting for Tsukino to catch up. Mayura’s face was flushed red and she stared at the ground.

“Say Tsukino” Yoru began as Tsukino watched him with narrowed eyes. She knew what was coming, and she also knew she wouldn’t be able to say no now. “What if I gave Mayura-chan here a piercing as well? Would you accept my gift then?” he suggested, smiling smugly.

Tsukino closed her eyes and inhaled slowly, taking a moment before looking to her best friend who was still staring at the ground. “Why don’t you ask her?” she told Yoru, who immediately turned to Mayura and leaned closer, putting his mouth right up to her ear.

“What do you say Mayura-chan? Wanna go get your ear pierced after school?” He offered in a low voice. Mayura didn’t say anything, instead she rapidly nodded over and over. He could’ve asked if she wanted to jump off a building, she would still have said ‘yes’.

“Well that settles it, I accept your gift. You happy now?” Tsukino asked, but judging by Yoru’s grin he really didn’t have to answer.

“Tsukino-chan, you’re the best!” Yoru laughed and yanked her closer, hugging her around the neck so tightly Tsukino felt as if she was being strangled.

“I can’t breathe” Tsukino managed get free, stepping out of Yoru’s reach this time. He still had his arm around Mayura’s shoulders and Tsukino saw him lean closer to her again.

“Of course, I can’t forget to thank you…” he whispered. “You, are the absolute best, for never failing to help me win Tsukino over” he added before kissing Mayura on the forehead.

“Meet me here at the gates after school okay? Don’t forget now!”

Tsukino and Mayura watched Yoru as he headed towards the school building. Tsukino glanced at her best friend, who still seemed to be in a state of bliss.

“You know he does that be-” whatever she was about to say was lost when Mayura shook her head.

“I know… and it’s dumb that I let him but… I like the attention. Even if it means nothing” Mayura sighed, still smiling.

“Do you think he’ll ever stop bothering me?” Tsukino asked as they headed inside.

“I don’t know, maybe when he’s won you over? Or you get a boyfriend?”

“So he won’t stop is what you’re saying?”

Well… what do you think? Hasn’t it just escalated?”

“It has…” Tsukino replied. She had kind of liked the attention in the beginning. It was cute… but she had quickly realized he wasn’t going to stop and for a year now it had honestly just gotten worse. Yoru had no boundaries and it was starting to scare her.

They entered their classroom, hanging up their jackets before going to their desks. First lesson after homeroom was English so Tsukino started picking out her textbooks from her desk.

“Hey, Tsukino?” Mayura said leaning over her friend’s shoulder.

“Mmm?” the other girl replied, gathering up her books in a pile. Mayura dropped a small velvet bag on top of the books on the desk.

“Happy Birthday” she said and Tsukino turned around a smile plastered on her face.

“Thank you! Can I open it?” she asked picking at the ribbon.

“Sure!”

“This is actually the first gift I’ve received today so-” getting the bag open and turning it upside down, a leather bracelet fell into her hand.

“Oh. My. God. Are you insane?! This is worth a fortune!” Tsukino told her friend who just gave her a cheeky grin.

“Well every time we passed the jewelry store you’d look at it and go ‘I want it’, so now you have it” Mayura laughed, helping Tsukino to put it on. It was a red and purple leather bracelet, with flat, diamond shaped studs.

“Oh, I love you!” Tsukino almost shouted hugging Mayura tightly.

● ● ●

Yoru sat on top of the wall just by the gate. He was looking up towards the school, waiting to see Tsukino and Mayura come out of the building. Leaning against the wall below him was Kazu.

“How did you get Tsukino to agree to this adventure?” Kazu asked as he watched Yoru.

“What do you think? I was lucky enough to have Yabuki-san waiting for her this morning so I simple offered…” Yoru made an offering gesture with one of his hands “and Tsukino accepted” he finished, leaning back with a smug smile.

“That’s not how you get someone to like you Yoru” Kazu told him disapprovingly.

“It’s working, isn’t it? She agreed”.

“Sure, she agreed but… look, we’ve had this conversation before, whatever interest she had or could’ve had in you died the first time you didn’t stop when she asked you to” Kazu said with a frustrated sigh. At this point he was serving as Tsukino’s bodyguard as well as Yoru’s conscience when they were in the same room. “Using Mayura-san to, it’s not gonna win you any points, admit defeat already” Kazu remarked, but when he looked up at Yoru he could see he was ignoring him, pretending not to hear.

“The piercing thing isn’t the gift, right? You made her something” Kazu moved on, Yoru was too stubborn to argue with, with any success. As little as he wanted to encourage his behavior, he also loved Yoru’s jewelry.

“It’s in my bag if you wanna have a look” Yoru answered watching as his friend pretty much dived for his bag. Between studying and hang outs Yoru also made jewelry in his spare time, it was a well-paying hobby. He even had a brand, Night K.

Kazu had found the little red box and opened it carefully. Inside was a very beautiful piercing topper, shaped like a moon, covered in black onyx stones with a single diamond near the top. “Oh man, this is beautiful. You know if Tsukino-san doesn’t want it, I’ll gladly take it” Kazu suggested, closing the box and putting it back where he found it.

“Haha, dream on. I’m not letting her give it back” Yoru said jumping down from the wall.

“How many times will I have to ask before you’ll make me a ring?” Kazu muttered handing the bag over to Yoru. He had been begging for a ring for almost two years.

“I won’t make you one. Think of the rumors that might start” Yoru fretted dramatically.

“Pfft, like you’ve ever cared about rumors. You know what they say about you and Tsukino-san.” Kazu snorted, knowing Yoru was joking. “I’ll pay for it. Just make me a ring, please” he continued but Yoru shook his head.

“Forget it, I don’t want your money.”

“Then what do you want?” Kazu demanded. He knew he could go buy a Night K ring from one of the stores that carried the brand but he wanted a custom one, one that was made just for him. It would make it so much more special, it would mean something.

“For you to stop asking? Geez…” Yoru was visibly irritated now, scratching at his neck. “Fine, I’ll make you one… just not now.”

“Is that a promise?” Kazu was never quite sure with Yoru.

“Okay yes. I promise I’ll make you a ring, at some point” Yoru confirmed as he started walking away, Tsukino and Mayura had finally appeared outside the building.

“I guess I’ll wait then. But that ring is not the only thing I want from you, you know!” Kazu yelled after Yoru who waved at him over his shoulder before joining up with the girls.

“Took you two long enough, did you hope I’d forget and leave?” Yoru asked.

“If only there was a god with that kind of mercy…” Tsukino whispered as Yoru led her and Mayura out to the parking lot.

“Come on, my driver is waiting!” he said eagerly.

 ● ● ●

Tsubasa stood by one of the large windows on the second floor, seeing as Tsukino and Mayura left school with Yoru. He hadn’t had any classes with them today, besides homeroom. Tsukino didn’t like hanging out with Yoru though so he was curious as to why she was leaving school with him.

He headed downstairs, meeting Sigma at the shoe-lockers. He liked Sigma, she was very nice and they’d been taking English together since he transferred to Shura.

“Hi Sigma-senpai!” he called to her and she looked up with a bright smile.

“Hi there Tsubasa-kun” she replied before continuing to put her shoes on, his eyes drifted to her bag sitting next to her and the English textbook sticking out of it.

“English homework? I thought we didn’t get any?” he asked pointing to the book.

“Oh, no just me. I got extra exercises again. Language just isn’t my thing” Sigma let out a sigh of defeat. She had failed English last semester so she was retaking it with the second-year students.

“Good luck! Let me know if you want help?” Tsubasa offered.

“Thanks, walk with me to the bus?” Sigma replied as she stood up.

“Sure! Hey, I saw Tsukino and Mayura leaving school with Yoru-senpai earlier. Do you know anything about that?”

“Not much, it’s Tsukino’s birthday today so Yoru has some big plans for her I bet. He probably offered to do something for Mayura to, to get her to agree.”

“Oh, I see…” Tsubasa nodded. If it was Tsukino’s birthday he wanted to get her something. He had given Mayura a present to for her birthday back in January. The girls had both been super nice to him when he first transferred to Shura, so he felt like it was the least he could do to show his appreciation.

“I’ve tried talking to Yoru about how he treats Tsukino, and Mayura for that matter but, well you know…” Sigma trailed off.

Tsubasa nodded absently in reply, he hadn’t had many interactions with Yoru, but he seemed like a scary person. How he treated Tsukino like a possession and the rumors going around school didn’t help the impression either. He didn’t really understand how people could fawn over Yoru the way they did.

“So, what are you giving Tsukino?” Sigma asked leaning closer to Tsubasa.

“What?” Tsubasa felt a blush grow on his face.

“A present, for her birthday, you’re getting her one right?”

“Well I thought- I mean- … I got Mayura a gift for her birthday but I didn’t know when Tsukino’s was- I don’t know what I should get her-” Tsubasa stumbled on his words as he tried to make up a valid reason to give Tsukino a gift.

“Haha, take it easy Tsubasa-kun. I didn’t mean to make you all flustered” Sigma laughed and patted him on the shoulder in a try to comfort him. “Give her something you like, Tsukino isn’t picky, for her it’s the thought that counts”

“Hmm, okay…” Tsubasa replied, embarrassed about how he reacted, but that had caught him off-guard.

“I’m starting to regret this…” Tsukino sighed. She and Mayura were waiting in the car as Yoru talked to the store owner. The car was ridiculously fancy, he had a personal driver to, who was eyeing at them through the rearview mirror.

“I thought you regretted this from the start” Mayura laughed.

“Yeah, but I’ve always wanted to try having earrings, so I thought I could use this as an excuse… I wish I had more say in this, Yoru-senpai is making all decisions…” Tsukino muttered, picking at the hem of her uniform skirt.

“He does this because he thinks you’re interesting, ojousan.”

Tsukino raised her head to see the driver looking at her in the rearview mirror.

“Excuse me?” she asked and Mayura also turned her eyes to the front of the car.

“Yoru-dono thinks it’s interesting that you don’t adore him like everyone else. He has challenged himself to win your heart by any means, ojousan” The driver said, Tsukino could see that he was smiling. She wondered if the driver knew that ‘any means’ was literal for Yoru.

A minute later Yoru came to get them, he had asked the shop owner to close for half an hour, just for them. Tsukino hoped it wasn’t causing them too much trouble.

The shop was small and Tsukino and Mayura had a look around. Tsukino was looking at one of the displays when Mayura called for her.

“Tsukino come look!” she said and Tsukino hurried over. One of the walls was covered in polaroids pictures of all the people who’d gotten tattoos at the shop. Mayura was pointing to a specific polaroid on the wall.

“Sigma-san and Epsylon-senpai got their tattoos done here!” She exclaimed.

“That’s cool, I guess the owner is a bit of a do it all” Tsukino pondered.

“You girls ready?” Yoru called from the back of the shop.

“Coming~” Mayura called back, Tsukino chimed in halfheartedly. The owner was quite a character, she had pitch black hair with neon green accents and she was covered in tattoos and piercings. Her entire left arm had a space them going, staring in nebulas at her shoulder and ending in a classic alien abduction of a cow at her wrist. Her long rabbit ears were packed with studs in various designs.

“Hi girls, my name is Keiko and your wish is my command” she introduced herself. Tsukino smiled, the name of the shop was ‘Your wish is my command’.

“This is Tsukino-chan and Mayura-chan” Yoru said gesturing to each of the girls.

“Well, Yoru told me we’re doing piercings so who is going first?” Keiko asked.

“I’ll go first…” Tsukino hurried to say, she wanted this over and done with.

“Don’t worry honey, it’s not that painful” Keiko hummed as she prepared her tools. Tsukino just nodded, Keiko-san obviously didn’t know why she was tense. She sat down on the small chair letting Keiko pull her hair back fastening it with a few hair pins.

“She’ll have a stud, Keiko” Yoru announced before Keiko could hand her the sample chart.

“What?! Wait, I wanted a ring!” Tsukino argued and Keiko glanced at Yoru.

“Her ears are pretty thin, a ring is the better option” Keiko agreed with Tsukino but Yoru pouted and shook his head.

“Find a place” He reaffirmed.

“How fast does a piercing heal after you remove it?” Tsukino asked between gritted teeth. She didn’t know if she should scream or cry, or both. She was so angry right now, she thought she’d at least get to choose. But who was she kidding, it was Yoru who had offered, of course she wouldn’t get to have a say.

“You don’t have to do it if you don’t want to” Keiko told Tsukino who just shook her head.

“I can refuse to do it.”

“Thanks… but he won’t shut up about it till I get it done…” Tsukino appreciated Keiko trying to help her out.

“Are you sure?” Keiko was still not onboard.

“Yes, please just do it”

Keiko just nodded as she sat down. A short minute later they were done and Tsukino got to get up and have a look in the mirror.

Next it was Mayura’s turn and she eagerly sat down, getting to choose exactly what piercing she wanted. Tsukino thought it was so unfair as she looked at them through the mirror.

“Keiko-san do you have TeddySIR jewelry? I would like to have one in silver” Mayura requested.

Tsukino shook her head. No, it was okay. Mayura was really enjoying herself. She was receiving a gift from her favorite person. One she had picked out. It was okay. Tsukino looked at herself in the mirror again seeing Yoru come up behind her.

“What now?” she asked.

“Just stand still and I’ll give you the present” he said and Tsukino widened her eyes. The piercing wasn’t the present? Yoru grabbed her ear and removed the piercing topper, replacing it with something else.

“Ow!! That hurts damn it, I just got it pierced!” Tsukino yelled and hit Yoru on the arm when he had let go of her.

“Oh don’t be like that, look” Yoru said pointing at the mirror. Tsukino looked and saw the new jewelry, it was quite sparkly. She stepped closer to see what it was. It was a moon.

“It’s my design, what do you think?” Yoru said and Tsukino gritted her teeth. The nerve of this guy, he didn’t have a single ounce of consideration in him.

“It’s dumb” she spat, heading back to Mayura who just got up from the chair.

“How does it look?” she asked, Tsukino looked at her piercing. It really suited her, a small silver teddy bear, at the top of her left ear.

“It looks great Mayura” Tsukino answered smiling, at least Mayura was happy.

“You two can head out to the car, I’ll be right out in a minute” Yoru said and Tsukino and Mayura did as they were told. When Mayura had closed the door behind them Yoru turned to Keiko with a grin that disappeared once he saw her expression.

“Forcing a girl to pierce her ear… what is wrong with you?” She asked bitterly. She had her arms crossed over her chest, disapproving.

“I don’t need your scolding, how much for the piercings?” Yoru asked.

“The one I did on Mayura-san is free, for the one on Tsukino-san I want twenty Night K. designs, and you won’t be getting the profit from them when they are sold” Keiko explained.

“Man, you’re pissed” Yoru said laughing.

“Yes, I am. I’m not in the business of dealing with people who treat their friends like that. Now get out of my shop… Don’t do things like that. You don’t force that girl, or anyone else, to do anything. You got it?” Keiko said as Yoru left waving at her when he closed the door. She would’ve refused to do the piercing on Tsukino, if Tsukino hadn’t been right. He was stubborn and wouldn’t have let it go.

Yoru had his driver drop Mayura off at a shuttle station that could bring her home. Tsukino did not like being alone with Yoru, his driver was up front, but she wasn’t sure which side he was one. As soon as they turned onto her street she called to the driver to stop.

“You can drop me of here” she said and he nodded to her in the rearview mirror and pulled up to the sideway.

“There you go, ojousan” he said as Tsukino opened the door.

“If I ever ride with you again please just call me Tsukino” she said and swung her legs out of the car.

“Tsukino-chan” Yoru called softly and she turned around, regretting it as she did because a soft kiss landed on the side of her mouth. Yoru was smiling at her, expectantly and she felt blood rush to her face as she gritted her teeth.

“Don’t ever do that again” Tsukino growled and got out of the car slamming the door shut. Yoru was quick to roll down the window and yell after her, “You know you love me!”

Tsukino just ignored him, she was too tired to argue anymore. She walked around the corner and up the driveway to her apartment building. As she climbed the stairs she spotted a small package next to her door. She picked it up before heading inside.

After kicking off her shoes she headed into the kitchen, on her way there hitting the play button on her phone’s answering machine.

“You have one message from ‘home’, playback?” the machine’s digital voice asked.

“Yes” Tsukino answered loudly and it went into play mode. Tsukino sat down at the table and listened to her family singing ‘happy birthday’. She read the card that came with the package.

I hope you like Strawberries
From Tsubasa

She raised an eyebrow. It felt a bit odd getting a present from him but when she thought about it, he had gotten one for Mayura as well.

She unwrapped the package and opened the box, in it stood a small strawberry plant. She smiled and carefully lifted it out of the box, putting the small plant on the windowsill in the kitchen.

She pulled out her phone and typed up a quick ‘thank you’ text to Tsubasa before heading to the bathroom to take a shower. It was the last thing she had to do before heading how to her family’s house to celebrate her 16th birthday.

December, year 2041

“Alright, that’s it for today’s lesson. Be sure to write all of this down because it will be on the exam” the teacher said as she sat down at her desk. Students were still copying what she had written on the board. “You may leave once you’ve finished” she added.

Tsukino put her pencil down and sat back, straightening her back against the rest and stretching her arms above her head. She turned to look out the window, linger at the view.

Everything was so white outside, usually they didn’t get much snow since Komatsu was so close to the ocean. But it had been very cold the past few weeks and the winter blanket had laid itself over the city.

“Tsukino! Get off your butt or I’ll leave you behind!” Mayura called from the doorway.

“Hold up!” Tsukino called back, quickly gathering her books and getting out of her seat. She ran after her best friend who was waiting in the corridor.

“What were you thinking about? I called for you at least three times” Mayura asked.

“Nothing really, I was just… I don’t know, not thinking?” Tsukino answered with a shrug.

They made their way back to their homeroom to fetch their bags and coats before leaving school for the day.

“Do we have any more homework this week?” Mayura asked as she buttoned her cape.

“We got some in biology yesterday, Ueda-sensei wanted it in on Friday” Tsukino replied absently as she rummaged through her bag for her other glove.

“Bleh, biology. You’ve already finished it, haven’t you?” Mayura said with distaste and watched Tsukino nod with a smug smile.

“Nerd” Mayura muttered as she put her biology book into her bag.

“Hey, you’re the artsy one, if anyone’s a nerd it’s you!” Tsukino countered in mock offense as they left the homeroom and headed down stairs to get their shoes.

“Well at the very least you’re a geek, what sane person finishes their homework more than a day before it needs to be turned in?” Mayura argued.

“Any sane person would finish their homework the moment they got it” Tsukino scoffed, managing to hold a very snooty expression for a few seconds before they both broken into laughter.

“Look at it from the bright side, the year is almost over, then you can switch to a different subject” she said as they arrived at their shoe lockers.

“Yeah but I want to be in the same class as you and you want to continue with biology, right?” Mayura replied as she removed her indoor shoes.

“I think-” Tsukino froze mid-sentence when she felt someone slowly running their hand down her tail. She knew who that was, if her body would just let her move she could do something about it.

“Hana-chan~” a boy’s voice whispered in her ear, his breath tickling her. It sent enough chills down Tsukino’s spin for her to regain control and she spun around yanking her tail from his hand.

“Yo-Yoru you idiot! Don’t call me that!!” she shouted, stuttering but she couldn’t help it. Yoru just grinned at her, the gold ring in his lip moving with the smile. He gave her a quick pat on the head before running down the corridor, catching up to Kazu who was looking back at the girls with an apologetic expression.

Tsukino sighed heavily as she turned back to her locker, hearing the whispers about her and Yoru spreading through the corridor. He had been targeting her since spring, didn’t they have anything better to gossip about? She wished he would just leave her alone.

“Wow, third time this week”

Mayura’s voice coming from just behind her made Tsukino jump.

“Do you have to talk over my shoulder like that?” she whined.

Mayura smiled playfully as she adjusted her boots. Tsukino hurried to take her shoes from the locker, replacing them with her indoor shoes before closing the small door.

“Seriously though, he wants you” Mayura said as they slowly made their way down the stairs, they had to be careful, it had been very slippery this morning and because of the snow the icy spots on the ground weren’t visible.

“Who? Yoru-senpai?” Tsukino answered absently as she watched the ground in front of her. She had already slipped twice this winter, she wasn’t planning on doing it a third time, with her luck she’d break something.

“No, my uncle… of course I mean Yoru-senpai, who else?” Mayura said, pretending to be annoyed with Tsukino’s disinterest. They had made it to the bus stop.

“I don’t know, anyone but him?” Tsukino huffed. “It is getting really uncomfortable. I mean, at first it was kind’a cute but now it’s borderline harassment…” she added.

“He really likes you, so why not give him a chance? Maybe he’s really nice once you stop resisting? I mean he’s nice to me and he’s popular… and hot” Mayura reasoned making Tsukino snort out a laugh.

“And you’re the one with the crush on him. It would just feel weird, not to mention unfair, to date someone you like so much”

“I know… I’m sorry. I’d just rather you be his girlfriend than anyone else. He’s nice to me and all but I know I don’t have a chance. He doesn’t see me, I’m invisible after all” Mayura replied in a sigh.

Tsukino turned her gaze to the ground. She never knew what to say when Mayura called herself invisible. She wasn’t invisible at all, she turns heads and people like her. But she is so fixated on Yoru she can see all the eyes that are on her. The only person she wants to be noticed by pays her no mind and it makes her blind.

“Bus is here” Mayura said, pulling Tsukino from her thoughts. They both dug in their pockets for their bus passes. Usually they would walk to the station, but it had been cold lately and buses were warm. They sat together in the back of the bus, warming their hands on the radiator below the seat.

“Don’t you at least want to try? See what it’s like to be Yoru-senpai’s girlfriend?” Mayura was still stuck on the topic.

“Drop it Mayura. The only reason he’s even interested in me is because I’m not interested in him. It’s all some twisted game to him” Tsukino replied, she had tried to imagine herself as Yoru’s girlfriend, many times, when she felt like giving up. But she couldn’t see it happening.

“Alright, alright… one more thing about Yoru though…”

“Oh my goodness, what?!” Tsukino asked turning to her friend whose gaze was fixed to the front of the bus. Tsukino knew that stare.

“He’s getting on the bus, maybe-” broken from her trance Mayura found herself speaking to an empty seat. Her cellphone rang just then and she picked up, knowing it was Tsukino from the ringtone.

“Where did you go?”

“I got off the bus. Sorry, I just didn’t want to deal with him”

“Haha, that’s okay. But won’t you miss your bus if you’re walking to the station?” Mayura asked.

“Yeah, I didn’t think that one through. I’m just gonna walk home, I’ll be home before the next bus comes around.”

“Well, I’ll see you in school tomorrow then. Bye Tsukino, oh and be careful when you walk home!”

“I will, bye!”

Tsukino put her phone away and watched the bus as it rolled off towards the station. She didn’t have any patience for Yoru today. So, she started her walk home through the neighborhoods, putting her earphones on and singing along to pass the time.

She’d gotten about halfway when someone tapped her on the shoulder. She spun around, worried Yoru might’ve followed her.

“Excuse me…”

It wasn’t Yoru, but it was a boy.  He had blue hair and eyes, Tsukino relaxed and removed her earphones.

“Hi…” she replied carefully. She thought she recognized him, but couldn’t quite place him. She tucked her earphone into her pocket.

“You’re Tsukino Hana, right? Is it okay if I walk with you? I live in this direction” the boy asked carefully as he pointed down the road.

“Sure, I guess…” Tsukino replied as they began walking together. Where had she seen him before?

“Do you live around here?”

“Not in the neighborhood, I live a bit across the river… I’m sorry but I’m having trouble placing you, have we met before?” Tsukino couldn’t figure out where she’d seen him, she had to ask.

The boy gave her a worried look. “We-We’re in the same homeroom class?” he tried nervously and right away Tsukino could place him.

“Oh, you’re the transfer student!” she exclaimed, he just nodded in confirmation, seeming very relieved. “I’m sorry, it’s Taiyouno… something right? I’m not good with names” she apologized.

“It’s Tsubasa, Taiyouno Tsubasa” he replied helpfully.

“That’s what it was” Tsukino nodded giving him a long look. Up close he was pretty cute. When he had introduced himself to the class a few days ago, he had seemed dark and gloomy, she hadn’t given him a second glance.

“How are you settling into school? You’ve had to memorize a lot of new names, I’m impressed you remembered mine. We haven’t even spoken properly until now” Tsukino said as they made their way down the street.

“People talk a lot about you for some reason, at school.” he replied.

“…Of course they do” Tsukino sighed. As Yoru’s chosen target it was hard to stay out of the gossip.

“Is it alright if I call you Hana-san?”

“I’d rather you didn’t.” Tsukino replied reflexively.

“S-Sorry… umm” he immediately went to apologize.

“No it’s okay, I just don’t like my name. Just call me Tsukino, everyone done. What should I call you?” Tsukino felt bad about the way she reacted and tried to move the conversation forward.

“Tsubasa is fine, my surname is a bit of a mouthful… you don’t like your name?” he replied carefully.

“Well it’s plain. It’s ‘flower’, not lily or rose or something pretty like that, it’s just flower and I feel cheated” she explained, it felt silly, but she really wished she had a prettier name.

Tsubasa didn’t reply with more than a nod and their conversation died down. After walking in silence for a bit Tsukino wanted to get him talking again. He seemed nice and he probably hadn’t made many friends yet, having just transferred schools. She watched him for a bit, he was fiddling with the cord on his jacket. She wondered if he was shy.

“Are you joining a club at school? Do you have any hobbies?” she asked, keeping it casual.

“Oh I… I’m not in any clubs. I like botany though…” he was being so quiet now, Tsukino felt guilty, she should’ve been nicer.

“Botany, like floral arrangements?” she couldn’t quite see him doing that.

“No, gardening. Mostly fruits and vegetables” Tsubasa explained.

“Oh cool! What’s your favorite thing about gardening?” Tsukino could see him loosening up and decided to ask more.

“I like all of it… maybe harvesting?” Tsubasa didn’t think long about his answer.

“I can understand that, that’s when all your hard work gets paid off. Do you have a garden? Oh wait, you just moved…” Tsukino continued asking, the more he talked the more she wanted to ask.

“Actually, the new house has a really big garden, I’m going to work on it in spring” Tsubasa replied, he was excited about that, she could tell.

“Promise you’ll show me some time” Tsukino said and in an instant Tsubasa’s face was bright red. He turned his gaze to the ground.

“S-sure…” he replied quietly. “This is my stop” he then added, pointing to a big fence gate on the other side of the street.

“Oh. I guess I’ll see you in school tomorrow then” Tsukino said.

“Yeah, see you tomorrow” Tsubasa replied and watched her as she hurried away. “Wait, can I ask you something now?” he called after her and she spun around, calling back.

“Sure!”

“Do you like singing?”

Yes, I do!” she replied before disappearing around the corner.

Tsubasa stood for a moment, waiting for her to come back to say something more but she didn’t.

He had been surprised to see her on the walk home, most students at Shura took the bus to the train station to go home from there. Yet there she was, walking ahead of him and singing along to the music she was listening to. She’d been pretty good. He was glad he had worked up the courage to talk to her.

Looking at the gate to the front yard Tsubasa let out a sigh. He took out his keys and went through the gate, unlocking the front door and heading inside. He tossed his jacket and bag on the hallway floor before continuing into the living room.

There were cardboard boxes everywhere, opened, unopened, half empty and empty boxes. Everywhere. Tsubasa hoped they’d never have to move again.
